Anne "Nancy" Kerr was born about 16 October 1759 in Caswell, Province of North Carolina, daughter of Alexander Kerr (1726–1813) and Mary Elizabeth Rice (1731–1765).

Her siblings were:

Ann married John Spencer (born in 1750 in Louisa, Louisa, Virginia; son of Thomas L Spencer and Elizabeth (Skillern) Spencer) in Caswell, North Carolina in 1781.[1] [2] [3] [4] [5] [6] Their children were:

Her husband John passed in 1825, and Ann is listed as an administratix of his estate along with their sons John and Isaac.[7]

The 1830 Federal Census in Gibson, TN shows her son Benjamin living with what appears to be his brother William's family along with a woman 60-69, who was most likely Ann.[8]

The 1840 Federal Census shows Benjamin still living in Gibson with the same or a different family, most likely his brother William. An older woman who is most likely Ann is still living with them.[9]

In 1850, Benjamin is seen in Madison with his brother William's family. Ann is no longer living with them, or any of her other children, which implies she passed.[10]

Research Notes

There has been some confusion whether Ann "Nancy" Kerr was married to John Spencer, or another woman named Ann. This is because Ann's marriage bond to John Spencer refers to her as "Ann Keer," as does the marriage certificate.[11][12] There is, however, copious evidence that Ann and John were married.

  • The will of Alexander Kerr, Ann's father, refers to her as "Nancy Spencer."[13]
  • The same will shows that Ann's sister, Mary "Molly" Kerr was married to John's brother, Benjamin.[14]
  • The Kerr family Bible[15], though, refers to her as "Ann Spencer," which implies they are the same person. Nancy was most likely a nickname, as there is no Nancy listed in the Kerr Bible, and no Ann listed in the will.
  • There is a record of a Nancy Kerr marrying a Benjamin Lea in Caswell, but upon further examination this turns out to be Ann's aunt, the daughter of Alexander's brother John Kerr.
  • The 1777 Census shows Alexander Kerr living in St. David's District in Caswell, which is the same district the Spencer family was living in at the time.[16][17]
  • Elizabeth Kerr, the daughter of Ann's brother John, married Joseph Pinnix, the son of John Spencer's sister Barbara.

Ann appears to have gone by "Ann" and not "Nancy" in formal documents. Her marriage certificate and bond refer to her as Ann, as do legal documents of the time, including John Spencer's will.[18][19][20]
