I have a paternal line that I have a brick wall on. My ancestor Mary Ann Ritchie is said to be the daughter of Robert Ritchie and Elizabeth Gwinn. I have found no proof of this. They did have a daughter named Mary Ann, but she lived to adulthood and married and had children of her own. Based on DNA Matches (Autosomal) I do share DNA with descendants of Thomas Richey and Rachel Shields, the parents of Robert Richey.

Also based on DNA Matches, I am trying to determine HOW I am related to the BUTTERWORTH family.

Why I Do Family History Research

For me, since my lines go back to the early 1600s in North America, genealogy personalizes history for me. I feel a closer connection to the events I read about in school. It also gives me a sense of perspective. When I read about the hardships, tragedies, and triumphs of my ancestors, it makes me realize how realively easy I have it, and fortunate I really am. And it gives me a real sense of debt and gratitude.

It gives me a lever to pry simple questions about me out of my own parents. What do my parents and I have in common here? We now know that, if family history is to be saved at all, with all the "old folks" passing on, the time is now or never, and I want to save what I can while I can. If, years from now, someone in the next generation wants to REALLY dig into the family stuff, at least I have given him or her a good, solid, scaffolding from which to begin, preferably with lots of interesting family stories too.

I do genealogy to leave my mark. I would hate to think I passed through this lifetime without leaving some sort of mark so that other people know I passed. I continue to do the work, sorting it all out, filing it in the appropriate places, and for me that is leaving my mark.

What started out as a simple project has now become all consuming. One of the nicest things to happen from this research is I now spend hours and hours talking to my family about my "finds" as opposed to talking about their health or the weather. I enjoy playing detective and sharing my finds with any and all relatives who care to have the information.

Mostly though, I enjoy it. To tell other people why is difficult. I love puzzles, solvable puzzles, the kind of history the digging entails. For me it's more of an addiction - ok, I'll be honest, it's an obsession. It seems like I have climbed every courthouse step in the state Missouri, as well as the surrounding states, but I'll keeping climbing those steps until I can't.

The main focus of my genealogy research has been my Kelley, Parker, Rector and Lee families. I currently have 5800 documented members of these families, and am in the process of adding/updating profiles on WikiTree to include them all.

Hi Laurie, I'm excited to collaborate with you on William M. Lusk. I want to know more about Rachel Kanouse. Do you know much about her? I'm assuming she is also the mother of my GG-grandfather, Allen Lusk. I found an 1850 land transfer document for property in Hartland, Niagara, NY, that I believe is this William M. Lusk, transferring land to Allen and John K. Lusk, and it names William's wife as Lucetta. I'm wondering if Rachel might have died before 1850 and William remarried this Lucetta? I can't find any more info on Lucetta either, so can't prove who Allen's mother is.

I wonder why we are not showing up as DNA matches in ancestry?

Hello Jean, What I know about Rachel is that she was born between 1795 and 1800 in Massachusetts (daughter, Lucy, death certificate gives place as Massachusetts - it also states her father Wm Lusk was born in Massachusetts so I need to look further into that because he was supposedly a native of the "Mohawk valley" which is in New York (sandwiched between the Adirondack Mountains and Catskill Mountains). From what I have found it seems William died after the 1850 census (I found him living with children Allen, John, and Rachel and an elderly lady (80 years old) named Elizabeth Lusk (whom I believe is Elizabeth "Lisabeth" (nee Groat) Lusk, his mother) in Hartland, Niagara county, New York. I believe Rachel did die at some point before the 1850 census was taken as she is not listed in that census record with William.

I'm not sure why we're not coming up as a DNA match unless it's just such a small amount of shared DNA that Ancestry no longer shows (below 8 cM). My GEDMatch is A473968, my father's is FG9297607 (Michael E Kelley) and my sister's is WM5547195 (Martha Marie KELLEY Pittman).

I changed William M Lusk's parents back to Isaac Michael Lusk and Lisabeth Groat. I had thought for a time that Ashael Lusk might be William's father, but I'm now more certain that Isaac Michael and Lisabeth Groat are correct because their youngest daughter, Charity, who married Austin Carpenter, is enumerated with Allen Lusk in the 1855 New York census and is listed as Allen's aunt. I've also surmised that the elderly Elizabeth Lusk listed with William in 1850 might be Lisabeth Groat. There is a source book called The Long Groat Line, The Third Generation Descendants, A Family History by James D. Groat, Jr. 1986, that I would love to find to see if it might shed some light on William's parentage. Any ideas where I might find access to this book?
I looked for the book you mentioned. A quick search shows only one link, https://germantownnyhistory.org/genealogy/ , The Germantown History Department - Genealogy. The link is half-way down but I can't get it to load on my phone. I'll try when I get home. I also found this link, https://www.genealogy.com/ftm/g/r/o/James-D-Groat/index.html , that gives some contact information for James D. Groat (who may or may not be the author).

Hi, Laurie. I stumbled upon your Germanna One-Place Study, and I saw a need to coordinate your work with the work that Willhite-329 started in 2014 at Category: Germanna Colonies in Virginia. (It's time to combine these parallel efforts!)

I'm not a Germanna descendant, but became aware of the Germanna colonies because of my work with the Palatine Migration project. See Category: Palatine Migrants for our discussion of the boundaries we set between the Palatine Migration and the distinct settlement of Germanna that occurred in the same time period.

I have some half-baked thoughts on how the coordination of the multiple efforts should/could be carried out, but for the moment I just wanted to alert you to the other efforts.
