Robert was born on December 23, 1905, in Keighley, Yorkshire, England. He was the son, and oldest of three children, of Thomas Kelk and Lauretta Mitchell.

Robert married Minnie Thompson in Keighley, at Saint Mary, Eastwood, on May 30, 1925. It is unknown, at his time, whether the couple had any children.

Robert passed away in Bradford, West Yorkshire, in 1984.
