Cairns Morning Post – Monday 17 August 1908 – p5 FATAL ENDING. It was stated in Saturday's "Post" that inquiries at the hospital at mid-night elicited the information that the young man Kealy, who was injured at Babinda while scrub-felling on Wednesday, was sinking, and that little hope was entertained of his recovery. The fears of the medical and nursing staff were only too well founded, poor Kealy passing away at about 5.30 a.m. Saturday morning. Everything that skill and attention could do to save his life or relieve his sufferings was done, and it will be comforting to his friends and relatives to know that he received the consolations of religion up to the last moment. The funeral took place on Saturday afternoon, the burial service being conducted by the Rev. Father Walsh.
Cairns Morning Post – Tuesday 18 August 1908 – p4 THE LATE W. KEALY. In connection with the death of William Kealy, under distressing circumstances, as the result of a tree-felling accident at Babinda Creek recently, it may be explained that the young man was unmarried, and as a matter of fact, at the time of his death was engaged to be married. This will serve to contra-dict a statement that the man was married, having a wife and family in New South Wales. He was a native of the Hunter River district and his father and mother are both living at Dungog on the Hunter. In conversation yesterday with Mr. Herbert Tucker, one of his mates for the past nine years, a "Post" representative was informed that "Billy" Kealy, as he was popularly known was a steady, decent, and respectable young fellow, a favourite with every-body, and a staunch comrade. He had been in Queensland between two and three years, having been about six months in the Cairns district, and at one time worked on the Town Council. Latterly, he, with Mr. Tucker and others, had a contract clearing some sugar land for Mr.A. J. Draper at Babinda Creek, and were by the latter insured under the Workmen's Compensation Act, so that the parents of poor Kealy will receive a substantial sum to com-pensate them in a small measure for the loss of an affectionate son.
William died on 15 August 1908 and was buried in McLeod Street Pioneer Cemetery, Cairns, Cairns Region, Queensland, Australia.[1]
