Philipp Kaiser was born in 1872, in Grimm, Russia, the son of Christian "Christ" Kaiser and his wife Anna Elisabetha Schmidt. He had four documented siblings:

  • Peter Kaiser, born in 1867
  • Heinrich Kaiser, born in 1876
  • Georg Jakob Kaiser, born in 1877
  • Konrad Kaiser, born in 1880

Philipp appears in the 1897 Grimm census.

1897 Grimm Census [1]

Family # 37
Head of the Household Christian Jakob Kaiser, age 58
Wife Anna Elisabeth Schmidt, age 55
Child #1 Peter Kaiser, age 30, married
Wife of Child #1 Anna Kaiser, age 24
Grandchild #1 Christian Jakob Kaiser, age 4
Grandchild #2 Anna Natalia Kaiser, age 1
Child #2 Philipp Kaiser, age 25, single
Child #3 Heinrich Kaiser, age 21, married
Wife of Child #3 Amalia Kaiser, age 21
Child #3 Georg Jakob Kaiser, age 19, single
Child #4 Konrad Kaiser, age 17, single

Philipp married Elisabeth Leonhardt and the couple had at least three children:

  • Elisabeth Kaiser, born in 1903
  • Maria Kaiser, born 1904
  • August Kaiser, born 1911

In late 1905, Philipp and his brother Georg Jakob "Jake" began to make plans to immigrate to the United States. The exact details of that sea voyage are still being researched. When they arrived at the U.S. port, however, one of the children had an ear infection and was denied entry. Rather than split up the families, they both decided to go instead to Argentina where there were other large German populations.

The circuitous route took them back to Hamburg Germany, where they boarded a ship bound for La Plata, Argentina. Traveling steerage, they made the ardurous journey which included stops in Dover, England; Boulogne-sur-Mer, France; Coruña Spain; Lisbon, Portugal; and finally La Plata, Buenos Aires, Argentina.

It's unclear how long the family remained in Argentina. His brother Jake's wife was unhappy there, and his family eventually returned to Russia. They finally made a successful journey to the United States in 1911, living for a few years in Colorado before making Fond du Lac, Wisconsin their home.

It appears that Philipp Kaiser also returned to Russia from Argentina, before heading back to the United States at the end of 1911. His brother Georg Jakob Kaiser, with whom he made his first, failed immigration attempt, immigrated a few months earlier that same year. Philipp and his family settled in Fond du Lac, where other Kaiser relatives already lived. See the 1930 and 1940 United States Federal Censuses below.

In the passenger manifest, there is another Kaiser party included with Philipp's family: Johann and Katharina Kaiser and children Karl, Jakob and Margaretha. The families were most likely related. Notations in "the name and address of your nearest relative in the country from whence they came" column says:

  • Philipp Jakob Kaiser, age 39, brother Johann Kaiser
  • Elisabeth Kaiser, age 32, brother-in-law

Each of their children has Uncle written after their names. Johann and Katharina Kaiser have Cousin written after their names, and their three children have the word Uncle written after their names. I presume they all refer to the same person back in Grimm, Russia. Johann and Katharina's children are obviously not his cousin's nephews and niece, but they probably referred to him as their uncle as a title of respect. I have added those designations as they appear in the passenger manifest to the list below.

Additionally, I have not identified which cousin this is, other than through the name listed in the census. He had no cousins with the singular name Johann or Johannes, although several had Johann as part of their names. The most obvious match would be Johann Jakob Kaiser, who also has the closest age match. The only problem is that the names of his children and his wife are off. It's possible that Johann Jakob Kaiser was married twice, and that the two youngest children belong to second wife Anna Elisabeth Wittmann and her first husband, a Mr. Birkheim.

Once I confirm who he is, I will identify him here and update his separate profile and those of his family members.
