Biography

According to Find-A-Grave, Kara was born in 1914. However, close inspection of the grave indicates date of birth in 1916. On the Marriage Certificate dated 26 January 1946, her age was stated as "28". That would make her year of birth at 1917.

She was the daughter of Alex Jordan and Leona Wheeler. She passed away in 1972 and is buried at Lamar Memory Gardens, Vernon, Alabama. ^[1]

My Uncle Dorris owned & operated a saw repair shop in Hamilton. I would ride with Aunt Kara who would pick up & deliver large band saw blades to lumber mills in Northwest Alabama & Mississippi. I would watch as Uncle Dorris & his employees repair any damage to the bands & then sharpen them.

Aunt Kara was also a FANTASTIC cook! One of the best things I would watch as she would make buttermilk & lard biscuits almost every day and make sure there was enough left over for lunch.

She also had a love of antiques. When driving around delivering saw blades she would stop at any little place she thought might have something of interest.

Her most prized possession was a large English polyphone. ( I don't know if that was the exact brand.) Basically a Victorian Age juke box, it required coins to play large metal disks punched out. The size & intricate artwork was a similar appearance to a grandfather clock.
