Louis Thomas Jordan was an American saxophonist, multi-instrumentalist, songwriter and bandleader who was popular from the late 1930's to the early 1950's, known as "The King of the Jukebox".

Louis was born in Brinkley, Arkansas the 8th of July 1908. His father James Aaron Jordan was a teacher of music and a bandleader of the Brinkley Brass Band and the Rabbit Foot Minstrels. His mother Adell (Buford) Jordan died when Louis was young and he was raised by his grandmother Maggie Jordan and his aunt Lizzie Reid.

He passed away in Los Angeles on the 4th of February 1975.[1]

Career

Louis studied the clarinet and saxophone at an early age and was a member of the Rabbit Foot minstrels and played professionally in the late 1920's. In the 1930's he played in Philadelphia and New York City with Charlie Gaines he also recorded with Clarence Williams for a short time he was a member of the Stuff Smith orchestra he also sang and played the sax with the Chick Webb orchestra. In 1938 he put together a band that became popular with such numbers as 'Choo Choo Ch'Boogie; 'Knock Me a Kiss', 'Is You or is You Aint My Baby' and 'Five Guys named Moe' .

Louis Jordan was a singer who fronted his band for over twenty years, Highly talented he sang duets with the top stars of the time ,Bing Crosby, Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong he also was an actor and appeared in dozens of promotional film clips and cameos features and short films , he also starred in two musical feature films made for him. He also played all of the different saxophone's particularly the alto. He also played the piano and clarinet. He was a songwriter and co-wrote many songs that were classics of the popular music in the 20th-century.
