Samuel "Sam" J. Jones was born on 21 January 1880 in Fife Lake Township, Grand Traverse, Michigan, United States to Ambrose Jones and Martha Ingersoll. ^[1]

In 1880, Sam lived in Orange, Kalkaska, Michigan, United States with parents, sister, and half-siblings. ^[2]

Sam attended school through fourth grade. ^[3]

Sam married Irene Morley, daughter of Joseph Morley and Jane McNitt on 26 December 1906 in Kalkaska, Kalkaska, Michigan, United States. He was 26, and she was 21. ^[4] Their marriage resulted in one known children: Edward Jones.^[5] The marriage ended in divorce.

On 12 September 1918, Sam registered for the United States World War I draft. He was living in Wilder, Fergus, Montana, United States, and worked as a carpenter for Grant Smith P. Company. Samuel was described as being of medium height and build with blue eyes and black hair. ^[6]
