Biography

Jean was born in Greenock about 1815^[1].

Jean married John Graham at Greenock (Old Parish) on 8th April 1835^[2]

In 1841 she (now usually 'Jane') is living with two other families (Lamont and Clark) in an unnamed house in Dalrymple Street, St. Thomas, Greenock. Her husband is not present at the census, and as well as the three children John. Mary and Archibald she is accommodating her sister Agnes Johnston^[3].

By 1851 she is confirmed widowed, living at 9, Market Street, Greenock, with her three sons, one of them less than a year old. Her daughter Mary is not here, possibly died. Her parents Archibald and Mary are also here at the census - perhaps they are there to supplement the family income, as Mary is only a muslin sewer, and her son John still needs supporting as an apprentice, leaving her mother to do the housework^[1].

By 1861 her father is still living with her (now at 22[?] East[?] Shaw Street, Greenock) but her mother has died^[4].

Research Notes

Parentage. Her father Archibald was born in Campbeltown around 1781/2. Unfortunately we cannot confirm his parentage, and therefore he is marked Uncertain here. There may well be two Archibald Johnstons which fit: The first is shown on a legal baptism in 1781, father Thomas. A second could have been baptised in 1782 after the wedding of William (possibly Thomas' brother), but no baptism record or other evidence has been found so far.

So, we need to establish which Archibald married a Mary born Greenock 1787^[1].
