Whoopi Goldberg is an American actor, author, comedian, and television talk show host. She is one of sixteen entertainers to win an EGOT - an Emmy Award, a Grammy Award, an Academy Award, and a Tony Award. Some of her notable performances include Sister Act (1 & 2), Star Trek: The Next Generation, Ghost, The Lion King, and The View.
Caryn Elaine Johnson was born on November 13, 1955 in Manhattan, New York City to Robert Johnson, a Baptist minister and Emma (Harris) Johnson, a teacher. Emma raised Whoopi and her brother Clyde alone.
Whoopi has explained that her stage name was taken from a whoopee cushion, referring to the gassiness she would have right before performances, and letting it out "like a whoopee cushion."
