Suzanne Jaroussel variations: Jarousseau, Jeanrousel, Jarousselle, Jarousse

Suzanne Jaroussel variations: Jarousseau, Jeanrousel, Jarousselle, Jarousse
Daughter of Pierre Jarousseau or Jaroussel and of Jacquette Touraut/Touraude, she was born around 1642 (25 in 1666, 22 in 1667), in Périgny (St-Georges) in Aunis (Charente-Maritime)[2]
For Suzanne, the perspective of going to live in New France starts around 1652. Suzanne Jarousseau, born in 1641 or 1645, was the daughter of Pierre and of Jacquette Touraud. The last decided to leave the region of Périgny in Aunis, and to start a new existence, shortly after the death of her husband. Widowed, she brings with her her only daughter, to join, in Canada, her sister Françoise wife of the pioneer Jacques Archambault.
Jacquette Touraud and her daughter lodged, it appears, with Jacquette Archambault and Paul Chalifou, in Québec city. According to the genealogist René L’Heureux, the similarity of given names of the two women would be the clue that the new immigrant was godmother of her niece.[3]
Marriage
Simon Lereau and Susanne Jaroussel entered into a marriage contract on 31 October 1655 before notary Claude Auber[4]
On 27 November 1655 after publication done of three bans on the 9th, 11th & 19th of the same month, having found no impediment, the r.f. René Ménart of the company of Jésus being empowered solemnly married Simon Leureau son and heir of René Leureau & of Marguerite Guillin with Susanne Jarousel daughter of Pierre Jarousel & of Jaquete Touraude, in the chapel of isle d'Orléans in the presence of known witnesses, Jean Baillargeon & Pierre Petit[5] (recorded in Notre-Dame de Québec)
They were established on île d'Orléans, the first baptisms being done in nearby Château-Richer.
7 known children, 5 known to marry. (listed above, names as originally recorded)

Marriage 2
Robert Coutart and Suzanne Jaroussel entered into a marriage contract on 5 February 1671 before notary Paul Vachon[4]
On 9 February 1671 in Ste-Famille IO, Suzanne Jaroussel, widow of defunct Simon Leureau, remarried with Robert Coutard, in the presence of Maurice Arrivé and Jean Guy, witnesses.[8]
They were established on Île d'Orléans on the north side according to the funeral record of Marie in 1673. From 1677 on, they appear to have moved closer to the church of Ste-Famille, baptisms being done the same day as births. They will later be found in the seigneurie of Lauzon on 1681 census.
4 known children from the marriage, only 1 of whom married (listed above)
On 6 February 1671 notary Paul Vachon completed the inventory of the community of Simon Loreau (sic, Lereau) and of Suzanne Jaroussel. On 5 March 1672 before the same notary was done the apportioning of inheritance of the minor children of deceased Simon Lereau with Susanne Jaroussel then wife of Robert Coutard.[4]
On 8 October 1674 Robert Cottard and Suzanne Jarroussel, his wife, made a sale to Pierre Lognon and Françoise Roussin, his wife, before notary Romain Becquet. On the 12th of the same month and year, before the same notary, Pierre de Becard de Grandville made a sale to Robert Cottart and Suzanne Jarroussel, his wife.[4]
1681 Census Seigneurie de Lauzon
Robert Cottar 40 ; Suzanne Jarossel, his wife ; 40 ; children : François 7, Marie 4, Pierre 1½ ; 5 horned beasts.[9]
On 28 January 1694 Suzanne Jaroussel, wife of the sieur Cottard, ratified an agreement made before notary Louis Chambalon on 26 January 1694, in regards to the succession of Simon Lerreau: between Robert Cottart, of the Lauzon coast, husband of Suzanne Jarroussel, widow in 1st marriage of said Simon Lerreau, on the one part; and François Frichet, of that city (Québec), husband of Anne Lerreau and having power of attorney from Pierre and Sixte Laireau, his brothers-in-law, and Jean Roche, of La Prairie de St-Lambert, husband of Magdeleine Laireau, on the other part.[4]
In 1686, at Chiqnitou dit Beaubassin, Susanne JAROUSELLE, aged 40, was living with her husband, Robert COTTARD, aged 40, and their child, Pierre, aged 6. The family owned 1 gun and was living on 2 arpents of cultivable land with 2 cattle, 1 sheep, and 1 hog.[12]
Death
Her date of death and funeral are unknown. She was not listed as deceased at the marriage of her son Xiste/Sixte in February 1694. She appears in no religious act subsequently. In February 1700, her children by her first husband, heirs of Suzanne and her first husband, made an agreement between them, which would indicate that she was deceased by then.:
In the 1686 census at Chiqnitou dit Beaubassin, Coutard is spelled Cottard and Jarousseau is spelled Jarouselle.[13]
René Jetté gives her the name Jarousseau, whereas Cyprien Tanguay names her Jaroussel. All records found for her name her Jaroussel/Jarroussel. Her mother's marriage contract of 15 June 1653 is the only record found naming her father Pierre Jarousseau. It may have simply been due to the practice of feminizing last names of women, the same can be seen for her mother, Touraut becomes Touraude.
Jean Arrivé is stated to be cousin et allié (cousin and ally) of Suzanne Jaroussel, whose mother Jacquette Tourault remarried with Maurice Arrivé[14]
at Chiqnitou dit Beaubassin: Robert COTTARD 40, Susanne JAROUSELLE 40; child; Pierre 6; 1 gun 2 arpents, 2 cattle, 1 sheep, 1 hog.
