He died in 1920 in Sydney.[6]

LATE SAMUEL JAMES. Sturdy Pioneer Dead. A pioneer of Young since the early days of Lambing Flat, Mr. Samuel James, died in Sydney last night, and will be brought to his old home in Burrowa street, whence he will be laid to rest in the Young cemetery to-morrow. Deceased went to Sydney a few weeks ago to consult an eye specialist, but after arriving there contracted bronchitis, which proved fatal. Deceased had reached the great age of 89 years, and was until recently able to get about. Of yeoman English stock, Samuel James arrived in New South Wales in the early fifties, lured as a young man of 21 years, to the gold rush. He followed the diggings in Victoria and parts of New South Wales with varying success. In the sixties he arrived at Lambing Flat. The whole township then consisted of a few tents round what is now the corner of Main and Boorowa streets. Past experience had shown him that little of lasting value was to be made at the diggings here, and he launched in the less speculative, but more certain business of supplying the rapidly growing miners' camp with meat. As the Flat grew more to depend upon agricultural and pastoral enterprise as staple occupations, he went on the land, first at Stoney Creek, and then in other parts of the district. In common with other reputable citizens, he had experience with Gilbert, O'Meally, Ben Hall, and other outlaws. He brought up a very large family of sturdy sons and daughters, most of whom are still in various parts of the Young district. After a long and useful life, the deceased gentleman retired some fifteen years ago and lived quietly at his Burrowa street residence. The funeral will take place to-morrow to the Church of England cemetery. The family comprise:—William (Stockinbingal), Charles (Stoney Creek), Samuel (Stoney Creek), John (Young), Edward (Spring Creek), Mrs. Freeman, Mrs G. Eastlake (both deceased), W. Aston (Stoney Creek), Mrs. E. Plumb (Young), Mrs. Thos Reynolds ("Ratho," Young), Mrs. T. Reynolds (Forbes) Mrs. L. Phillips (Sydney), Mrs. Alchin (deceased) Mrs. Frazer (Sydney). [7]
