Biography

Harry Jackways was born in Somerset, England.

Harry Jackways lived in Gore, Southland, New Zealand.

Harry was born about 1856 and baptised on 4 May 1856 at Winscombe.^[1] His family were living in Slough Pit Sandford.

In the 1861 census Harry (age 5), Scholar, was the son of John Jackways in Slough Pitt, Winscombe, Axbridge, Somerset, England.^[2]

In the 1871 census Harry (age 15) was the son of John Jackways in Hamlet of Sandford, Winscombe, Axbridge, Somerset, England.^[3]

Harry married Caroline Hoy on 22 November 1875 at Burlington Street Chapel, Weston Super Mare according to the rites of Bible Christians.

Harry, Caroline, their son William and brother William Jackways emigrated to New Zealand in 1876. They left London on the Wiltshire on 12 November 1876 and arrived at Lyttleton on 17 February 1877. ^[4]

By 1881 the family had moved to Gore where Harry was the Racecourse caretaker.

Harry passed away on 5 October 1942 at Dunedin Public Hospital, Dunedin^[5].
