Biography

Ralph was the son of Ralph Izard of the Province of Carolina and his wife Mary. He inherited The Elms plantation on Goose Creek and several other plantations in the province.[1]

Like his father, Ralph was active in provincial politics. He represented Berkeley and Craven counties in the Commons House of Assembly in 1711-1712, then in 1712 he was appointed as a proprietor's deputy and member of the Grand Council. After leaving the Grand Council in1716, he returned to the Commons House from 1716-1720, where he supported the movement to make South Carolina a royal colony. Despite this support, he was again appointed to the last Grand Council in 1719; he subsequently served on the Royal Council from 1721-1731. Ralph also held other local and provincial offices, including Attorney General in 1737.[2]

About 1712 he married Magdalene Elizabeth Chastaigner, daughter of Alexander Thesee Chastaigner and Elizabeth Buretel. They had children Henry, Charles, John, Mary (m. William Middleton), Charlotte, Anne, Martha (m. Edward Fenwick), and Catherine.[1]

Ralph Izard wrote his Will on 28 March 1740, and it was proved 9 December 1743. In it he details his numerous land holdings in South Carolina and also mentions property in Great Britain. His heirs were wife Magdalene Elizabeth, daughters Charlotte and Martha, and sons Henry and Charles.[3]
