Laura Houghtaling Ingalls was born on 14 Dec 1893 in Brooklyn, New York, daughter of Francis Abbott Ingalls (~1858 - 1928) and Martha Houghtaling (1865 - ). She was an aviator.
Her brother was Francis Abbott Ingalls Jr (~1895 - ).
Laura died on 10 Jan 1967 in Burbank, California aged 73.
Laura Houghtaling Ingalls was an American aviatrix who won the Harmon Trophy for her record-breaking South American circumnavigation in 1934. She flew a Lockheed Air Express from Mexico to Chile, over the Andes Mountains to Rio de Janeiro, Cuba, and then to Floyd Bennett Field in New York, becoming the first American woman to fly over the Andes, the first solo flight around South America in a land plane, the first woman to fly from North America to South America, and setting a woman's distance record of 17,000 miles.
Unfortunately, Ingalls is also remembered for being charged in 1941 with violating the Foreign Agents Registration Act of 1938 by acting as a paid agent for Nazi Germany through the German Embassy in Washington, DC. Despite claiming to be an anti-Nazi spy, she was a strong advocate for Nazi Germany and was involved in pro-Nazi activities prior to the US entry into WWII, working with the Gestapo chief in the German Embassy to gather information. She was convicted and served time in jail and prison from February 1942 to October 1943; after her release, she remained sympathetic to the German regime. She was arrested but never charged for attempting to enter Mexico with a suitcase containing seditious material in 1944. In 1950, she petitioned the President for clemency, but both requests were denied.
In the 1910 census Laura (age 16) was the single daughter of F Abott Ingalls in Tuxedo, Orange, New York, United States.[1]
