Biography

Francis Ingalls, son of Robert and grandson of Henry Ingalls, is mentioned as the brother of Edmund Ingalls. Together, along with four others, Francis and Edmund founded the settlement of Lynn in 1629.[1]

Robert Ingalls' will of 1617 names Edmund as his oldest son and Francis as his youngest son.[2]

Francis married Mary (Unknown) and had a daughter, Lydia, who marrried Joseph Belknap, all three of whom are named in Francis' 1762 will.[3]

Joseph's will was written 12 Aug 1672 and the inventory of his estate was conducted 30 Oct 1672.[4]

In working further down the Ingalls lines I am finding duplicates in later generations with the main differences being Ingalls vs Ingles or similar. I have made comments that they should be merged and often nothing has happened. If someone finds I created a duplicate I merge or remove mine. I followed the comment by others who mentioned the Ingalls spelling should be used. I have several lines that the last name changed or evolved in later generations. Most histories have given the original names and or shown variations that did or may have occurred for that person or generation. If there is evidence of this in these Ingalls lines sources should be mentioned. If they appear to be isolated instances than I would defer to the more common spelling.

I read that he had a daughter and no male descendants. That indicated that the early Ingalls lines all descend from his brother Edmond. That would include the lines to President James Garfield which includes my Ingalls line and the line of Charles Ingalls of the "Little House On The Prairie" books and TV show. I believe it is claimed he left a will which mentioned his married daughter. I will keep an eye out for the source or sources. Here is a reference: EDMUND INGALLS [LYNN, MASS. 1628-9] AND SOME OF HIS DESCENDANTS Page 2, Francis Ingalls b.1601 lived in Swampscott [Waldo Thompson's Hist.] where he had a tannery. His will recorded in Suffolk Registry at Boston. He left no male descendants, and his daughter Mary married Rodger Belknap. I found this and more on google. I have copied some of this early publication. Because of the volume I only copied pages that followed my line after the introduction and early history of this family. This Ingalls line has connections with other lines in my family history which include Ludden , Wheeler and Cole family lines.

Ken, if you could include information about where you read that it would be great. Maybe it's a primary or vetted secondary source?

Ken, Robert Charles Anderson's Great Migration has a good starting point for quality, reliable sources concerning the man of this profile (not his family, necessarily). The sources he listed are as follows:
  • EQC 2:270
  • EPR 1:27
  • WP 4:135
  • NEHGR 50:71-72
  • TAG 52:241-43, 55:109-10
  • Pillsbury Anc 2:1955-57
  • TEG 19:43-44

Tracking down each source that is listed by using this page to determine the abbreviation code will help with the search: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Sources-GMB TAG and TEG are behind paywalls, but someone here would be happy to help you out.

I did a quick look on the TEG article and it says that Francis was born in 1601, had a wife, Mary (Unknown) and a daughter, Lydia, who married Joseph Belknap. The Burleigh source, p. 17, found in the current profile above, tells us that the information concerning wife, daughter, son-in-law comes from Francis' will of 1672.

I have attached his wife and daughter. It appears that his daughter may have died young and apparently did not marry as no records seem to exist for her after her birth.

Ingalls-647 and Ingalls-306 appear to represent the same person because: both have the same siblings, same father and same date of death with same location.
