George Iles served as a US military pilot during World War II. He was one of the “Documented Original Tuskegee Airmen.” The Tuskegee Airmen were known for heroic combat service in support of Allied Forces in the European Theater. They served with the 332d Expeditionary Operations Group and the 477th Bombardment Group, both largely Black units of the United States Army Air Forces.
George Jewel Iles was born in 1918. He was the son of George Iles and Juanita Howell.[1]
George Iles served in the U.S. Air Force in World War II, Korea, and Vietnam. In 1945 George's plane was hit by anti-aircraft fire and he crash landed in Augsburg and was taken to a multinational prison camp in Nuremberg. When that camp was evacuated, prisoners were marched for over a week and took friendly fire. Later, George served as an intelligence officer.
He passed away in 2004[1] and is buried in Sierra View Memorial Park, Olivehurst, California.[2]
