Biography

Fanny Emma Caplin aka Fanny Emma Caplin Huntington was born in 1859 in Landport, Hampshire, England. Her parents were John James Caplin and Sarah (Harfull/Harfield) Huntington.

The birth of Fanny Emma Caplen Huntington was registered in Portsea Island, Hampshire in the last quarter of the year, with mother's maiden name Harfull.[1]

  • Fanny's parents were not officially married when she was born. Although her mother was a widow, it seems her father was still legally married to his first wife. Fanny's parents do not seem to have ever registered a marriage, but by 1864 their children were being registered as though they were married (with the surname Caplin/Caplen and mother's maiden name Harfield/Harfull). By the time of the 1871 census they were living as husband and wife. Fanny had the surname Caplin on all records other than her birth registration and the 1861 census.

In 1871 Fanny E Caplin (age 11, Scholar) lived in Winchester St Thomas, Hampshire with her father John J (43, Upholsterer), mother Sarah (40, Upholsterer), and eight siblings [all using the surname Caplin, though the three eldest were from her mother's two previous marriages]: Sarah A (23, Upholsterer), James (16, Errand Boy), Henry (14, Scholar), Marian [Marina] (8, Scholar), William (6, Scholar), Kate L (4, Scholar), Alice (3, Scholar), and Thomas P (1).[3]

Fanny Emma Caplin married John Samuel Howard in 1880. The marriage was registered in Winchester in the first quarter of the year.[4] They married on 7 March 1880 at Winchester St Thomas, Southampton, England.[5]
