Biography
John Caplin was born in Portsea, Hampshire, England.
John James Caplin (aka Caplen) was born in about 1831 in Portsea, Hampshire, England to William Caplin and Elizabeth Paskell (Bull) Caplin.
John James Caplin, son of William & Elizabeth, was christened in 1831 in Portsea St John.[1]
John's mother passed away in 1834. His father remarried in 1836, to Mary Mulhall.
In 1841 John Caplen (age 10) lived at Aylward Street in Portsea with his father William (50-54), stepmother Mary (50-54), and brother George (20-24).[2]
John James Caplin (Bachelor, son of William Caplin) and Elizabeth Burges [aka Burgess] (Spinster, daughter of Richard Burges) were married on 19 Oct 1848 in Alverstoke, Hampshire.[3] The marriage was registered in Alverstoke in the last quarter of the year.[4]
John and Elizabeth had two children:
John William Caplin (1850-1852)
Elizabeth (Caplin) Harding (1852-1897)
In 1851 Jno James Caplan (age 22, Upholsterer) lived at Prince George Street in Portsea with his wife Elizabeth (23, Dress Maker) and son Jno Wm (0).[5]
John and his wife seem to have separated before 1861.
John was in a relationship with the widow Sarah Huntington (formerly Cox, nee Harfull/Harfield) from at least 1859. At the time of the 1861 census Sarah was listed as a widow and John was listed as married and was a boarder in her household. Most likely John was still married to Elizabeth and thus could not marry Sarah.
Their first three children were registered with the surname Huntington but all had Caplin/Caplen as a middle name and used Caplin on all other records:
Sarah also had five children from her two previous marriages (it's possible the two youngest sons were also John's, as it isn't certain when Sarah's previous husband died):
In 1861 John Caplin (age 30, Upholsterer) and his daughter Elizabeth (9) were boarders at Chalton Street in Portsea in the household of Sarah Huntington (30, Carpet Maker), along with Sarah's six children (at least two of whom were also John's): Sarah Cox (13, Scholar), John Huntington (8, Scholar), James Huntington (6, Scholar), Henry Huntington (5, Scholar), Fanny E Huntington (1), and Ellen Huntington (0).[6]
On census records from 1871 onwards, John and Sarah were living as husband and wife, and all of Sarah's children who were still at home were using the surname Caplin and were listed as John's children.
In 1871 John J Caplin (age 43, Upholsterer) lived in Winchester St Thomas, Hampshire with his wife Sarah (40, Upholsterer) and nine children: Sarah A (23, Upholsterer), James (16, Errand Boy), Henry (14, Scholar), Fanny E (11, Scholar), Marian [Marina] (8, Scholar), William (6, Scholar), Kate L (4, Scholar), Alice (3, Scholar), and Thomas P (1).[7]
In 1881 John J Caplin (age 50, Upholsterer) lived at Sussex Street in Winchester St Thomas with his wife Sarah (50, Upholsterer) and seven children: James (26, Painter), Henry (24, Carpenter), Marina (18, Upholsterer), William (16, Upholsterer Apprentice), Katie L (14, Scholar), Alice (13, Scholar), and Thomas P (11, Scholar).[8]
In 1891 John J Caplin (age 60, Upholsterer) lived at Victoria Road in Winchester St Bartholomew with his wife Sarah (50 [~60]) and two sons: James (36, Painter) and Henry (34, Carpenter).[9]
John James Caplin passed away in 1898, aged 66 years. His death was registered in Winchester in the first quarter of the year.[10]
