William Egerton, the son of William Hunter and Dinah Sutton, was born on February 15, 1868, and baptized March 24[1].
William became a noted architect, both on his own and with his partner, Joseph Kastler[2]. Among his work are at least 26 buildings, including several residences and places of worship[3].
In 1871, William, aged 3, was living with his parents, William and Dinah, along with his little sister Mable, aged 1, in Hamilton, Ontario[12]. William Sr., aged 35, born in England, was employed as a moulder. His mother, Dinah, was born in Ontario. The family was W. Methodist.
William E. N. was married to Elizabeth A. Kay in 1893[13]. Their marriage record reads:
Wm. E. N. Hunter, 25, residing in Detroit, born in Canada, bachelor, architect, son of William Hunter and Dina Hunter, married
Elizabeth A. Kay, 24, residing in Dundas, born in Canada, spinster, daughter of John Kay and Eliza G. Kay,
Witnesses: John F. Kay, B.A., Dundas, and Mabel Hunter, Hamilton,
On July 11, 1893, in Dundas, Ontario.
In 1900, Wm. E. N. and Elizabeth Alice Hunter were living in Detroit, Michigan[14] with their three children.
In 1910, Egerton N. and Elizabeth A. were living in Detroit, Michigan, with their three children[15].
In 1920, William and Elizabeth were living in Detroit, Michigan[16], with their children, E. Kaye and Donald.
William Hunter married Jennie B. Gainey in 1928 at the age of 60, being divorced from Elizabeth[17].
William E. N. Hunter died in California in 1947. His wife, Jennie B. Hunter, was the informant, reporting his occupation as architect. She provided his birth place as Hamilton, Ontario, born on February 15, 1868, the son of Wm. Hunter and Dinah Sutton. [18].
In 2021, the City of Windsor, Ontario made notice of their intention to designate the lands and buildings at 766 Devonshire Road under the Ontario Heritage Act. The house was designed by William for the owner, Niels C. Ortved, who, at the time, was the chief chemist and fermentologist for Hiram Walker and Sons Ltd.[19]
