Biography

Earl was born in Revere, Massachusetts in 1901, the 1st of 7 children of Henry Hunnewell and Eva Tracey.[1] Eva took Earl back to Nova Scotia to visit her parents in 1903, along with some of her Bishop cousins.

The family moved to Melrose, Massachusetts where Earl's siblings were born: Gladys (1904),[2] Mildred in 1907,[3] Irma in 1909,[4] Walter in 1912, [5] and Charles (Billy) in 1916.[6] The family lived in a small house built by Henry at 387 Grove Street. [7] [8]

Henry promised Eva he would build them a grander house in Melrose, but he suffered for many years from a paralytic disease and was an invalid much of the time.[9] The older children left school early to help support the family.[10] Earl left school after 8th grade and worked as a carpenter along with Henry. Gladys and her sister Mildred were stitchers at local clothing factories. [10] Earl also worked as a milkman.

Eva died in September 1931 at age 52, just 7 months after she had news of her father's death in Nova Scotia.[11]. Henry died two years later in 1933, leaving all the children living at home, aged 17 to 32. Henry and Eva are buried together at Wyoming Cemetery, Melrose, Massachusetts.[12] [12]

The three girls all married soon after Henry's death: Mildred married George Albert Newbury just 3 weeks later, Gladys married John Copp the following March and Irma married Travis Crowell in June 1934. The family home on Grove Street was given up for back taxes, as none of the children could afford to pay off this accumulated debt from his father's illness.

Earl worked as a utility repairman and mechanic and during WWII he enlisted in the Reserves. He later trained as a mechanic in the Air Corps and was honorably discharged.[13]

He became a stamp dealer and lived in Malden, Massachusetts. He never married.

He served again as an Army mechanic during the Vietnam war. After his brother-in-law John Copp died, Earl moved into the household of his widowed sister, Gladys, in Melrose, where he lived until his death.

Earl died at age 81 in Massachusetts[14] and is buried in the Veterans section, Wyoming Cemetery, Melrose. [15]
