Biography
Martha was born about 1841, a twin with sister Eliza Ann. She was the daughter of Caswell Hughes and Caroline Paulina Seay. [1]
She married Miles B. Collard (1833–1915) in 1857 in Independence Co., Ark.[2] Their children were[3][4][5]
Eliza Emma (1857-1897; m. Holt and Self)
Joseph T. (1859-1870)
John Jefferson (1862-1957; m. Martin and Burgess)
Mattie Ellen (1869-1953; m. Hicks)
(daughter) P. C. (1872-1900)
(daughter) L. M. (1875-1900)
(son) W. N. (1879-1900)
and up to five other children who were born and died between 1857 and 1900.[6]
Martha Jane passed away after 1910.[7]
(Pls. note: Other trees say Miles married Martha Jane Rodgers Hughes, a widow, and I did find a Martha Jane Rogers, who married a Thomas Hughes in 1851 in Independence Co., Ark. However, that Martha Jane died bef. the 1860s and Thomas went to Calif. I've also seen trees that say she married James R. Tow in Greene Co., Mo., and lived in Okla., but he married a Martha Jane Hughes whose father was Samuel P. Hughes of Greene Co., Mo. Also, my mother has a number of confirmed DNA matches who are descendants of Hughes/Collard.)[8]
