Biography

Tabitha Huff (ca 1772 Brunswick Co, VA - after 1830 GA) was the granddaughter of Daniel and Mary ( ) HUFF, father not identified.

On 29 Apr 1789 in Brunswick Co, Virginia, she married Thomas HUFF (ca 1765 Brunswick Co, Virginia - 1811 Jasper Co, Georgia)[1] (ca 1772 Brunswick Co, VA - after 1830 GA), with consent of Mary HUFF. Tabitha was granddau of Daniel and Mary ( ) HUFF, father not identified.

They lived in VA, then possibly in NC, and finally in GA.

Children cannot be firmly identified, but some guesses are possible. If not children, the following are at least close relatives.

  1. Thomas (22 June 1788 VA - 15 Oct 1855 Anderson, Shasta Co, CA) lived among HUFF families in GA before he became a Mormon and moved through MS to UT and CA. His widow moved back to ID. Their ch were Olivia; William Thomas; Pheriba; Sarah Jane; Margaret; Rebecca; Bethena; Jonathan Gunn; Joel; Thaddeus Wilton; Elizabeth Virginia; Lucy Ann L.; Mary Frances; and Jefferson Adams. Thomas HUFF, Sr, and Thomas HUFF, Jr, each purchased items from the estate of their relative, William HUFF, Sr, in Hancock Co, GA, on 29 Dec 1806. (Though the birth date of 1788 precludes this being a child of Thomas and Tabitha, it does not preclude him being a child of a prior marriage. The designation of Jr, did not mean he was a son, but it is possible.)
  2. Whitfield (1793 GA - before 1860) md in Pike Co, GA, on 21 Aug 1825 Elizabeth MARTIN (1808 GA/TN - ) and lived in Pike and Spalding counties of GA. Ch incl Francis M.; Martha A.; Thomas H.; Henry; John A.; Adeline; Betsy; Benjamin H.; and possibly others. Whitfield HUFF started his family in Jasper Co, GA, and moved to Pike Co along with Franklin HUFF.
  3. Harrison (c 1802 GA - ) bought land from Franklin HUFF in Steward Co, GA, in 1835 and lived there in 1840. There was a Harrison HUFF who md in Clarke Co, GA, on 9 Nov 1819 to Mariah HUMPHRIES, but this would seem to be an older person. In fact, this older Harrison HUFF (c 1795 - 11 Apr 1877 Columbia, Henry Co, AL) served in ;the War of 1812 and in the Seminole War. He and Mariah had Nancy; Frank; Mathew; Frences; Dawson; and possibly others. There may have been two Harrison HUFF families.
  4. Franklin (1801 GA - Jan 1868 Pike Co, GA) on 17 Dec 1834 in Pike Co, md Ann BOWMAN (1818 GA - ) and farmed at Hollonsville in Pike Co. Ch incl: John T.; James Franklin; Helem M.; Nancy j.; Harrison B.; Martha A.; William A.; George W.; Jefferson J.; and Sylvianna Jane.
  5. Ransome (c 1807 GA - app. d. after 1860) was listed as under 7 in Tabitha HUFF's return for the estate in 1814. In 1850 he was with Franklin HUFF's family in Pike Co, and in 1860 near to Franklin HUFF with Joel and Elizabeth HANCOCK. Ransome lived most of his life in the home of Franklin HUFF, certainly a close relative, possibly an older brother.
  6. Silva (c 1809 GA - ) was an orphan along with Ransome, both under 7, in 1814. On 28 Dec 1830 in Jasper Co, GA, she md Thomas F. SPENCER, and SPENCER ch were:

Thomas and Tabitha were married for 23 years, and very likely most of their children were born before 1800. Clearly, Ransome and Sylvia were the only two young enough to be considered as orphans in 1814. After Thomas HUFF died, Tabitha HUFF and Joshua CALLAHAN were administrators of his estate. Sale of the estate brought in $688.11, and Tabitha HUFF was the main purchasor. Lundy HUFF was also a purchasor, and James HUFF helped administer the estate.
