Marriage

The North Purchase Proprietors Records recorded, "8 Sept. 1711. Josiah Howland for his wives dew doth Pitch between the first ministry Lott and Briants first Lott."[1] Note the use of the word "wives" is plural, and it indicates that Josiah Howland had been married to more than one of the daughters of Rev. George Shove. Elizabeth (Shove) Holloway and Sarah Shove were the two deceased daughters of Rev. George Shove, but Johanna (Shove) Howland and Yetmercy (Shove) Howland were the only two living daughters of Rev. George Shove at that time, so the first wife of Josiah Howland would have to have been Mary Shove.

Mary Shove, age 11, and her younger sisters, Johanna, age 9, and Yetmercy Shove, age 5, were taken to the home of General John Walley, the brother of Rev. Thomas Walley, Jr., whose wife was their mother, Mrs. Hannah (Bacon) (Walley) Shove who died in 1685 in Taunton, Bristol County, Plymouth Colony. Gen. John Walley's residence was at the west side of High Street between Charles Street (now State Street) and King Street (now Church Street) in Bristol, Bristol County, Plymouth Colony, and they lived near proximity of the residence of the young Josiah Howland and his father, Jabez Howland at the corner of Charles Street (now State Street) and Hope Street.[2] That explained how they knew Josiah Howland when they were playmates, and then Mary Shove became Josiah Howland's first sweetheart and fell in love with him.

Josiah Howland and Mary Shove were married prior to 12 June 1695 when Congregational Church of Bristol (Jabez Howland and his wife Bethiah had been in "foremost efforts" in the building of the Congregational Church in 1684)[3] recorded the baptism of the unidentified Mrs. Howland,[4] so they would have been approaching 19 years of age in 1695. The names of any and all newly admitted and baptized members of the congregation would be known and recorded, it must be concluded that the unidentified Mrs. Howland of baptismal record had to be have been Mary Shove, the first wife of Josiah Howland. The fact is that no given name, maiden name or husband's given name were included in the baptism of Mary Shove adds credence to the conclusion that information was being withheld from public access.

Mrs. Mary (Shove) Howland died sometime before her widower Josiah Howland married second, her younger sister, Yetmercy Shove in 1709.

In Bristol, Josiah Howland, at that time being the widower, bought the land from Nathan Hayman on November 1, 1709, so from Barnstable, his family could move to Bristol to live in the house by Hope Street, probably nearby King Street.[5] Later, Josiah Howland, age 33, and Yetmercy Shove, age 27, were married by Mr. Russell on November 24, 1709, in Barnstable, Plymouth County, Massachusetts Bay.[6][7][8] After that, from Barnstable, they returned to Bristol to bring his four children of his first wife, Mary (Shove) Howland, in the house on the land where he bought from Nathan Hayman.[5] See more informaton below in the section of Land Records.

Children

The list is found on page 333 in the work of Franklyn Howland, apparently includes four children of Mary, presumed to be the children of Josiah and Yet Mercy. However, the children are listed without mention of Josiah's having a first wife by the three genealogists William Thomas Davis (1883), Franklyn Howland (1885) and Charles Roscoe Howland (1946), and they were never appropriately established. The vital records never made available to the public for the children of Josiah and Mary (Shove) Howland. Whatever their reasons for not recording their children was not explained.

On page 153, the work of William Thomas Davis (1883) listed four children in an assumed appropriate manner, but he thought there were no children born between Josiah's birth in 1717 and his father, Josiah's death in 1717, so he put all four children having unknown birth dates within the four years between Yetmercy's birth in 1713 and Josiah's birth in 1717.

On page 332 and 333, the work of Franklyn Howland (1885) listed four children in the same order after Yetmercy's birth in 1713 and Josiah's birth in 1717.

The work of Charles Roscoe Howland (1946) listed all six children of Yet Mercy between the years of 1709 and 1717, and he put the births of Elizabeth and John before the birth of Yetmercy in 1713.

It is a custom for the genealogists to list children of unknown birth dates in order of their birth after children with known birth dates rather than trying to guess where they might fit in their family.

Probable/possible children of Josiah Howland and Mary Shove, born in possible order:

  1. Elizabeth Howland
  2. John Howland
  3. Samuel Howland DNA results have proved that he was not a son.
  4. Patience Howland

The research shows that it is not known if those four children definitely did survive to an adult life because they would have shared in their grandfather, Jabez Howland's estate on February 21, 1711/12, but they did not. The vital records of Bristol is very complete record, so they are not recorded there. Perhaps, they were recorded there in Barnstable before Josiah Howland married Yetmercy Shove in Barnstable. Unfortunately, some records of Barnstable are fragmentary.

Proven children of Josiah Howland and Yetmercy Shove, recorded in the vital records of Bristol, Bristol County, Massachusetts Bay:

  1. Yetmercy Howland was born on March 11, 1712/3 in Bristol, Bristol County, Massachusetts Bay.[9] She was baptized on August 5, 1723 at the First Church of Christ in Bristol.[9] She married first Isaac Palmer on October 17, 1731 in Bristol.[9] Isaac was the son of John and Elizabeth (Richmond) Palmer.[9] He was born on January 14, 1701 in Little Compton and died before April 26, 1732.[9] She married second Nathaniel Howland on December 6, 1733 in Bristol.[9] She died on August 8, 1737.[10][11]
  2. Josiah Howland was born on April 9, 1717 in Bristol, Bristol County, Massachusetts Bay. He was baptized on May 8, 1722. He died on February 6, 1748 in Bristol, Bristol County, Rhode Island.[10]

Land Records

North Purchase Purchase Estate of George Shove

"8 Sept. 1711. Josiah Howland for his wives dew doth Pitch between the first ministry Lott and Briants first Lott." (North Purchase Proprietors Records, Vol. V, Page 16). Note the use of the word "wives" is plural, and it indicates that Josiah Howland had been married to more than one of the daughters of Rev. George Shove. Elizabeth (Shove) Holloway and Sarah Shove were the two deceased daughters of Rev. George Shove, but Johanna (Shove) Howland and Yetmercy (Shove) Howland were the only two living daughters of George Shove at that time, so the first wife of Josiah would have to have been Mary Shove.
"20 May 1714. Josiah Howland for what Land is due Joannah the wife of John Howland whose maiden name was Shove. Pitches to take Joyning to what he hath already Pitch for that is due to his wife between the first Minister Lott and Braint's Lott." (North Purchase Proprietors Records, Vol. V, Page 20).
"17 May 1715. John Howland and Josiah Howland May the 17, 1715 Pitches for what Land that may conveniently Have Joyning to what they have already Pitcht for near the ministry Lott on the sixty acres division. (North Purchase Proprietors Records, Vol. V, Page 34).

Death

According to the Bristol Vital Record of 1705 - 1767, ”Josiah Howland was taken sick the fifth Day of february and departed this life the next Saturday being the 8th of february 1717: about 7 or 8 o clock att night” in Bristol, Bristol County, Massachusetts Bay.[18]

Josiah Howland died on February 8, 1717/18. The date of February 8, 1717 was corresponding to Julian calendar because on July 12, 1717 “Josiah and Yet Mercy granted and released one-sixth part of a share of North Purchase Lands to Malachi Holloway of Middleboro, widower of Elizabeth (Shove) Holloway, and John Philips of Taunton North Purchase, who in turn quit-claimed title to Josiah and Yet Mercy Howland of one-half of the share willed to his 5 daughters by the Rev. George Shove. The next day Josiah and Yet Mercy agreed that John Philips by purchase owned one-half of that whole share, and that Josiah and Yet Mercy had full and correct title to the other half of that North Purchase share.”[19] Josiah Howland was still alive at that time, so the date of his death should be on February 8, 1717/18 (Old Style/New Style). Also, the inventory for the settlement of Josiah Howland’s estate was taken place on March 15, 1717/18 (Old Style/New Style). Another interest is to look up the calendar online to compare the February of 1718 with the February of 1717, and locate the date when he died on Saturday on the 8th of February.[20]

Burial

Josiah Howland was buried at East Burial Ground in Bristol, Bristol County, Massachusetts Bay (now Rhode Island).[21]

  • Children list (sourced)? Each profile of a person who had children should have a list of those children at the end, (with some identifying fact). One secondary source for the list is fine. Their profiles will have better sourcing.
    • Are the children attached the ones on the list? Do the facts agree?
