ORIGIN OF THE NAME by Dr. Paul Houchen Various Spellings The name, HOUCHIN, was chosen as the title for this history because that is the spelling used by the earliest family of record. There have been, and are, many variants of the name, both in England, and in this country. It is probable that all in America, and certainly all from Virginia, are from a common source, but as each branch became separated from the parent Stock it took its own particular way of spelling. Twenty-seven different versions of the name have been found, some of which are Howchyn, Howchin, Howchen, Houchen, Houchin, Houchine, Houching, Houtchen, Houtchin, Houtchon, and all with the letter, ‘s’, added at the end.
The Family Name How did you say you spelled your name? No, you’re not related to me. Why, you spell your name with an ‘i’ in it, And I spell my name with an ‘e’. It makes no difference how you spell your name.; Whether you use an ‘i’ or an ‘e’; Or whether you end with the letter, ‘s’, Or whether you put in a ‘t’. We all of us sprang from a common source, I mean in the Howchin line. So it makes no difference if you do spell your name A little bit different than mine. We’re all of us cousins whether we like it or not; Don’t fret o’er an ‘i’ or an ‘e’. Just strive to keep the name honorable Whether you’ve added an ‘s’ or a ‘t’.
French Origin The name seems to have had its origin in France where “This ancient and illustrious family (Houchin) is known since Gillis d’ Houchin, knight, gave in 1202 his tithes to the church.” —“The Annual of the Nobility of France” by Hauterive. Included also, in this account of the family, are Simon d’ Houchin, governor of Oisy in 1303, and Louis Francis Joseph Houchin, the Marquis of Longastre, deputy of Nobility in Artois, and an officer in the King’s Army.
English Origin Three authorities on the origin of Anglo-Saxon surnames, Bardsley, Weekley and Harrison, state that the name Houchin is derived from a first or font name, and literally means baptismal son of Hugh. If the Houchins came into England from France, they must have settled along the eastern coast of England in what is now Essex, Suffolk and Norfolk counties. There is an old manor house yet standing in Essex county called Howchins which dates back to ancient times.
