Biography

Samuel Benjamin Holt was born on 29 Jun 1879[1] in Owensville, Gasconade County, Missouri. He was the son of Harvey Washington Holt and Permelia Ann Leach.[2]

In 1880[3] Samuel, the youngest of five children, is 11 months old, living with his parents in Canaan Township, Gasconade County, Missouri. His father is a farmer. Samuel’s mother died when he was fifteen on 1 December 1895.[4] At age 21, in 1900,[5] Samuel is living with his widowed father and sister Eliza in Canaan Township, Gasconade County, Missouri. (Note: This census mistakenly labels his father as divorced.)

He married Marie Elizabeth Nichols on 24 Nov 1904 in Versailles, Morgan County, Missouri.[6] Their children:

  1. Opal M. (Holt) Eisenhauer (1906-1962)
  2. Harvey Nichols Holt (1909-1950)

The 1910 Census[7] shows him at age 30 with his wife, two children, and his widowed mother-in-law in St Louis Ward 26, St Louis (Independent City), Missouri. His occupation is furniture salesman. This census states that his wife is the mother of 2 children, and 2 are still living.

His WWI Draft Registration Card[1] shows that he and his wife live in St. Louis, Missouri. It also shows that he is 39 years old and that he is working as a shipping clerk for a furniture company. He is tall and of medium build, with grey eyes and dark brown hair.

The 1920 Census[8] shows him at age 40 with his wife and two children in Little Prairie Township, Pemiscot County, Missouri. His occupation is foreman at an egg case manufacturing company.

The 1930 Census[9] shows him at age 50 with his wife, his unmarried son Harvey, his late sister Malinda's youngest son Elvin Maupin, his married daughter Opal Nulsen and her two daughters (but without her husband) in St. Louis, Missouri. His occupation is mover.

He died in Owensville, Gasconade County, Missouri on 9 Nov 1939 at age 60 from a coronary occlusion as a result of coronary artery disease.[2] He is buried at the Oak Grove Cemetery in Bel-Nor, St. Louis County, Missouri.[10]

His death certificate states his occupation is upholsterer.[2]
