Biography

The first mention of John M. Holmes is his marriage with Harriett Mitchell on 29 July 1830 at Harmony Methodist Church in Edgefield, SC. [1]

24 Jun 1841. An advertisement was found in the Edgefield Advertiser. John Holmes, Carriage and Harness Maker. Informs the citizens of this district, that he attends to repairing and painting Carriages, etc, making and repairing Saddles, Bridles, and all other kinds of Harness. He can be found at all times, at his residence near Pottersville, and will be thankful to his friends, for all work in his line. [2]

25 Jan 1848. Lloyd Mitchell and John Holmes are surveyed 7 acres of land by Daniel White, bounded by Mrs. Sarah Laborde and John Huet. [3]

7 Dec 1848 L. L. Mitchell and John M. Holmes sell to John L. Doby and A. H. Burt... for $40...land on waters of Rens? Dam Creek...7 acres bounded on the west by Col. John Hueit, south by Mrs. Sarah Laborde. Wit: W. H. Atkinson, W. W. Goodman and Pr. R. Blalock. Harriet Holmes, wife of John Holmes, relinquished her claim on 12 June 1849. [4]

17 Jan 1849. Edgefield Advertiser. G. L. & E. Penn for N. L. Griffin, Assignee, vs John HOLMES; S. F. Goode vs the same, one house and lot in the village of Edgefield, where the defendant lives, adjoining the lot of Wm. B. Johnson and others. [5]

5 Feb 1849 Loyd L. Mitchell, Caroline Mitchell and Josiah A. Mitchell to John W. [M} Holmes, for $1, all our interest in 3/4ths of an acre in the Village of Edgefield where the said John M. Holmes has resided for several years, bounded by lands of W. B. Johnson, Sarah Laborde, and the lot of the late Mary Mitchell and the main street being the lot sold by the said Mary in her lifetime to the said John M. Holmes. Wit: Daniel Holland, P. F. Laborde. Signed by: L. L. Mitchell, Mary Mitchell, and J. A. Mitchell. Proven 19 May 1849. [6]

He and Harriett are then found in Pike County, GA on the 1850 census. He is listed as a carriage maker. [7]

John is also listed on the 1850 Georgia tax digest for Pike County, District Griffin, Militia District 1001, with one poll. Harriet is listed under his name possibly due to having her own money. [8] He also has one poll on the 1851 digest for the same area.

1852 - J. M. Holmes is now on tax digest for Griffin, Spalding County, with one poll and 1 person subject to military duty.

John apparently died between 1852 and 1860 as Harriett is found on the 1860 Richmond County, GA census with no husband or sons listed. Son Lebud is also found on the 1860 census with his second wife and their children.
