Biography

Hannah P. Holman was a daughter of Daniel and Dulina (Holman) Holman. She was born in southwestern Missouri on or about 21 Oct. 1869 (date from her obituary, from info provided by one or more of her children). Her place of birth is hard to prove, but was probably in either Dade County or Polk County, Missouri. I have an old note that she was born in Morrisville (in Polk County, Missouri), but that may just have been the town which was close to a family farm or rural home in 1869? She appears with her parents on the 1870 and 1880 census for Dade County, Missouri. Hannah married Samuel H. Grisham in Dade County, Missouri 13 Nov. 1893 at the home of a justice of the peace. Hannah and Sam can be found on the 1900 census in Polk County, Missouri. The 1910 census lists Hannah and Samuel Grisham in Walnut Grove Township, Greene County, Missouri. Her father's death notice in The Walnut Grove Tribune, 22 Nov. 1911 edition, lists "Mrs. S.H Grisham" as Dan Holman's daughter. Sam and Hannah Grisham moved from southern Missouri up to southeastern South Dakota about 1916-1918, sometime after their daughter Claudia married Grover Christensen. To the best of my knowledge, they made their home in South Dakota for the rest of their lives, with brief visits to the Kansas City area, and to Litchfield, Illinois. Both Samuel and Hannah passed away at the farm home of their daughter Claudia and son-in-law Grover, and rest in the Danefield Cemetery, Clay County, South Dakota. [1]

See also: obituary for Mrs. Grisham is visible in the Beresford Republic weekly newspaper for 30 Nov. 1939, page 1, column 2, visible on the free website of the Beresford Public Library under their historic newspapers section. Mrs. Hannah Grisham (wife of Samuel Houston Grisham) was Miss Hannah P. Holman. Her parents' farm was in Dade County, Missouri at the time of her birth. She had relatives in adjacent Polk County, Missouri as well. I have an old note that she was born in Morrisville, Polk County, Missouri, but I do not have proof that this information is accurate. The town that was later called Morrisville may have just been the nearest town to a family farm? I think whoever provided the information to the newspaper for her obituary may not have known where Hannah was born, or where she married. The obituary does provide her birthday as 21 Oct. 1869. She was born in southwestern Missouri, probably in Polk County or Dade County. Her middle initial was P., but I have not seen her middle name written in full on a document yet. She and Samuel H. Grisham were married by Justice of the Peace T.D. Kirby at his residence in Dade County, Missouri 13 Nov. 1893. They lived for a time outside of the town of Walnut Grove, Greene County, Missouri, not far from Dade County, Missouri. Their daughter Claudia married Mr. Grover Christensen of Union County, South Dakota and moved to his farm. Sam and Hannah Grisham, as well as their son Hartle Samuel Grisham, also moved to southeastern South Dakota, near the town of Beresford. Sam and Hannah's second daughter Tina also moved to South Dakota with her children, following the death of Tina's husband. Both Sam and Hannah died in South Dakota and were buried in the cemetery used by Mr. Grover Christensen's family, called Danefield Cemetery. Their gravestones are visible on the free website South Dakota Gravestones.
