Biography

John was a Friend (Quaker) and was a member of Chuckatuck Monthly Meeting Monthly Meeting, Nansemond County, Virginia

John Hollowell, the tenth child and of Thomas Hollowell, Sr. and Alce was born on 5th November 1672^[1] in Virginia.^[2]. John's older brother John died at the age of 16, the year before, and Thomas and Alice gave this new child the same name.

A10 - John Hollowell b. 5 of 9 mo. 1672, the youngest child of Thomas and Alice Hollowell, settled on the western side of Western Branch of Elizabeth River in Norfolk County, Virginia on land willed him by his father. He was a Quaker being a member of Chuckatuck Monthly Meeting. He helped to build the first Friends Meeting House in the Virginia colony in 1702 (see page 9).

In the Quit rents for taxes for Norfolk County 1704 John Hollowell Sr. is listed as owning 524 acres.

He married Elizabeth (probably Scott) about 1693. She was born 12-10-1675. To them were born four children - Thomas, John, Jr., Elizabeth, and Edmund. (Quaker Record) John Hollowell, Sr. died 1719. He left no will.

John, Jr. was administrator of his father's estate:

"at a court held 17 July 1719 certificate of administration if granted John Hollowell, son of John Hollowell, Sr., deceased, he having complied with the law... it is ordered that Thomas Scott, Thomas Wright, Walter Bayle and Joseph Cherry or any three of you meet sometimes betwixt this and next court and appraise the estate of said deceased"^[3]

In a book of Orders and Appraisements Page 63, Thomas Scott, Walter Bayle, and Joseph Cherry met at the house of John Hollowell, Sr., deceased and appraised the goods and chattels which amounts to sixty pounds, thirteen shillings, and seven pence, this 29 day of July 1719.

Things not appraised: 16 head of small young hoggs, 62 pounds of dry hides, 24 geese and 360 feet of plank that my father bought towards building his dwelling house which is not yet and a small pail of pocome given under my hand this 21 Aug 1719. Signed, John Hollowell, Jr.

"At a court held 21 Aug 1719 through petition of Elizabeth Hollowell, daughter of John Hollowell, Sr. lately deceased and setting forth that there are some personal effects in the hands of her brother John Hollowell, Adm. of the goods and property of the said deceased, she hath a right to a proportionable part and being of age according to law to recover her said part thereof, be it therefor ordered that she be paid the said part according to her portion"

Book 10 - Page 79. She was about 21 years of age at this time and later married John Bacon. This proves that John Hollowell b. 5 of 9 mo. 1672 was the father of John, Jr who died will proved 1752 Norfolk Co.

2. ↑ Edmond's date of birth is recorded as "5th of the 9th mo. 1672." Prior to 1752 in England and in the Colonies, dates were using the Julian calendar, in which the year began on March 25. That means that "1st month" referred to March, and "9th month" referred to November. So this date is most likely the 5th day of November, not the 5th day of September. Confusing, right?
