Biography

Jerome Holland is Notable.

Jerome Heartwell "Brud" Holland was an American university president and diplomat. He was the first African-American to play football at Cornell University, He was also the first African-American to chair the American Red Cross Board of Governors. He was the first African-American to sit on the board of the New York Stock Exchange, and the first appointed to "The Corporation", Massachusetts Institute of Technology's governing body.^[1]

Jerome Heartwell Holland Jr. was born in Auburn, New York in 1916.^[2] He was the fourth of thirteen children of Robert Howard Holland Sr. and Viola Bagby.

In 1948, he married Laura Elizabeth Mitchell.^[3] They would have at least four chidlren. Their son Joseph would become a renowned businessman and civic leader.^[4]

He died in 1985^[5][6] and is buried in Fort Hill Cemetery in Auburn.^[7]

He was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in April 1985.^[8]
