George Hobson was born about 1716, possibly in Chester County, Pennsylvania. He was the son of George Hobson and Elizabeth Lindley[1] who are first documented in Frederick County, Virginia in 1732 (see father profile). This George Hobson is noted as 'junior' in extant records in Virginia.
First Marriage
George married Hannah Kinnison on or after 8 August 1732 in Chester County, Pennsylvania:[2]
It may be read that after marriage they lived on Mill Creek, Maryland near the Virginia state line (now West Virginia).[3]
On 2 November 1743, George's parents (George Sr. and Elizabeth Hobson) gifted to him 600 acres of land, surveyed the day previously by Alexander Ross. George later conveyed part of this land back to them on 5 March 1744.[4]
To North Carolina
George is recorded in Orange County, North Carolina by 1755.[5] Hannah's transfer certificate to Cane Creek Monthly Meeting was received 5 Feb 1757 from the Goshen Monthly Meeting.[6]
Second Marriage
He married second, Rebecca (Unknown). Very little is known of Rebecca. It is assumed that she was younger than her husband George and therefore born after 1716. George's first wife Hannah (Kinnison) Hobson is last recorded signing a deed in August 1760. Rebecca signed a deed in 1761 as the wife of George; their marriage can be inferred to be in late 1760 or 1761. George and Rebecca were noted as residents of Orange County, North Carolina.[7]
Revolutionary War Service
He passed away about 1797.
Land Records
Land Patent No 663 in Orange County, North Carolina, 2 Feb 1761, "Lying on the Forks of Rocky River." 620 Acres, Grant No 53, Bk 14, Pg 416.[9]
There is a memorial for George and wife Hannah Kinneson Hobson at Rocky River Friends Cemetery, citing "Pioneers of Rocky River". It does appear to be flanked by two old markers, but further research needed to verify. [10]
