Biography

Josephina Johanna Euphrosyna Hjorth was born on December 7, 1823 in Västervik parish in Kalmar län, province of Småland in Sweden. She was the daughter of skipper/skeppare Anders Hjorth and his wife Johanna Elisabeth Grip in Norra kvarteret 83 in Västervik. Josephina was christened on December 11, 1823. Sponsors were merchant/handlare G. Lundin, cooper/tunnbindare M. Andersson and his wife, merchant/handlare P. D. Westermark, postal secretary/postsekreteraren Anders P Wallén, Fru Charlotta Lundin, mademoiselle Helena Mæchel and mademoiselle Wilhelmina Lundström.

Josephina married sjötullsvaktmästaren Thure Wilhelm Ström on December 7, 1851 in Västervik parish.^[1] They had two children: son Johan Thure Wilhelm Ström b. 1852 and daughter Siri Alma Johanna b. 1854.

Her husband passed away aged 30, from tuberculoris on February 10, 1856. He left Josephina with their two young children. Johan was 3 and was Siri 1½ years old.

Josephina passed away from the same illness (lunsot/consumption/tuberculosis) on January 31, 1863 in Västervik.^[2]

The children thus orphaned aged 10 and 8 years old. They were raised by their uncle Alfred and their aunts.

Johan went to sea/gick till sjöss in 1873 and worked on merchant ships (Coopv[erdie]. Sjöman). He is listed in his uncle Alfred Edward Hjorth's household until 1882, but with a note in the household records "i Afrika", i.e in Africa from the records covering 1876 and on wards.

Research notes

She signed her husband's estate inventory as "Josephine Ström född Hjorth", so we now she was called by her first name among the three names she was christened with.
