Biography

Sophia Hill was born at Machias, Maine, 9 Jun 1784, the daughter of Obadiah Hill and Sarah Harris; [1] [2] died at Calais, Maine, 3 Jan 1876, aged 92y 7m (g.s.), and is buried in the Calais Cemetery; [3] [4] [2] married (1) at Machias, 20 May 1804, Stephen Brewer, he of "Schoodras" and she of Machias, [5] [6] [7] [2] born at Roxbury, Massachusetts, 26 Feb 1771, the son of John Brewer and Joanna Aspinwall; [8] died at Calais, 16 Sep 1817, [2] and is buried in the Calais Cemetery. [9] Sophia married (2) at Calais, 22 Apr 1821, Henry Knight, as his second wife, [10] [11] [2] born at Machias, c1773, the son of Jonathan Knight and Mary Atkins; [2] [12] died at Calais, 30 Jul 1840, aged 66y, [13] [2] Henry Knight had married (1) at Calais, c1798, Martha "Patty" Dyer, [14] born, probably at Machias, Maine, say, c1775, the daughter of Jones Dyer and Hannah Harrington; [15] [2] died after 15 Aug 1820, when a child was born to her at Calais, Maine, on that date, [16] [2] and before her husband's second marriage, 22 Apr 1821.

About the same time, that is, about the beginning of the present century [1800], Stephen Brewer, Esq., of Boston became a citizen of Township No. 5, and was immediately and justly assigned to high rank in society. This intellectual, wealthy and influential man was the first resident that exported lumber, the first Justice and Postmaster in the place; and he presided at the first Town meeting, introduced the first wagon and fitted up the first Church. His home was near the corner of Maine and North Milltown streets. In 1804, he married Sophia Hill of Machias, who as Mrs. Knight is still living and to whom I am indebted for valuable information. They had but one child, Nancy A., who married Wm. Spring and moved to California. Mr. Brewer died in 1814 [sic]. The next year his widow received from friends in Boston, a Chaise, the first one that ever graced the streets of Calais.[7]

Lived at Calais. [17] [18] [19] [20]
