Biography

Emma was born in 1774. She was the daughter of Patrick Heslin and Mary Heslin (maiden name not listed)
Bridget (Heslin) Hobbs was a convict after the Third Fleet transported to New South Wales
Bridget Heslin

Interred 1793 Arrived on the "Sugar Cane" From Cork at 18 Years of Age - Sentenced to 7 Yrs Emigrated 1811 Muster - Living at Windsor With R. Hobbs

  • Bridget’s surname is listed at various times as ESLIN, ESTIN, ESLING, HESLIN, HEASLING, HASLIN, HASLING, HASSLING. It is estimated that her birth was about 1775 in Dublin Ireland.

Bridget was tried at Dublin September 1792 and sentenced to transportation for seven years . She was aged 18 and on board "Sugar Cane" when it left Cove, Cork Harbour, Ireland 12 April 1793 and arrived in Australia 17 September 1793, a voyage of 157 days. The "Sugar Cane" was a Thames built vessel of 403 Tons, launched 1786 with the Master Thomas Musgrave and Surgeon David Wake Bell. She carried 110 male and 50 female Irish convicts. On 25 May, 43 days out, there was a :rumour that some of the prisoners had freed themselves of their irons and planned to take over the ship with the support of some of the guards and crew. To quell this attempt at mutiny one man who was found out of irons was executed and several others were flogged. This ended any further talk of mutiny. Except for the man who was executed there were no other deaths on the voyage.

According to family stories, Bridget's name was ESLIN and she was a Hedgerow Teacher in Ireland (it was illegal for the underclass to be educated and classes would be conducted behind the hedges - thus a hedgerow teacher). No records have been found to support this theory, however it was not for this crime that she was sent to Australia. According to the research of Barbara Hall, Bridget and her family and friends were members of a gang who stole bleached linen from the bleach greens in Dublin. There has been well documented data from the Freeman’s Journal, published Dublin to support this theory with articles printed in 1785, 1789, 1791 and 1792.

" Known gang members were Patrick Haslin (father), executed , his wife involved but her name not given, their known children were Patrick (transported to NSW per Boddingtons 1793),Bridget (transported per Sugar Cane 1793), John (involved in the gang also), Joseph Kearns alias Dungan (transported to NSW per Boddingtons),Mary Hughes (transported to NSW per Sugar Cane), Michael Dooley probably executed, Thomas Hughes (fate unknown).

Bridget formed an association with Robert HOBBS and their first child, Robert was born 19 Sept 1796 in Sydney, just three years after her arrival in the Colony. This birth was found in a family bible but doesn't appear in official records.

Bridget's finished her sentence in 1779, however her Ticket of Leave was not granted until 6th February 1811. [1] Muster of Females in the Colony 1806 - shows Bridget as a concubine with six children.

Not much information has been found on Patrick Haslin (Eslin), Bridget’s brother who arrived on the Boddingtons in 1793. According to Coralie Hird’s research she has revealed the following: †Indent & Lesley Uebel?s CD: Patrick Hasler alias ESLIN arrived Port Jackson on Boddingtons 7 August 1793. He?d been sentenced September 1791 at Dublin to 7 years. Age 20. Boddingtons sailed from Cork. James McClelland Index No. 1 to Convicts and free persons arriving Port Jackson 1788-1793: Frederick Hasler convict age 20 P/S Boddingtons 1793. Sentenced to Life at Dublin Sept 1791. Musters and Lists NSW & NI 1800-1802:ESLIN, Patrick S AF542 shows him as No.547. (* taken from the Hobbs Newsletter #2 Author: Beverley Woodman nee Hobbs).

Forgive my ignorance, but why is Bridget's profile managed by the Australia Project? There is nothing in her profile to say that she is not just another convict.

Hi Doug,

From my understanding the Australia project provides a very useful function of enabling disputes about profiles to be managed amicably and help different members communicate effectively. In most cases, the project profile is managed because there is conflict, rather than notoriety of the profile. It may well be that profiles of note tend to be more disputed that others. Who knows? :)

Thank you Gillian, I still worry about the merge of Heslin-83 due to the number of errors in that tree. Just an example, the children of Robert Hobbs & Bridget Heslin were Robert, Mary, Elizabeth, Harriett, Edward, Joseph, Catherine, John and Sarah. There was no James Herbert Hobbs, Thomas Hobbs or Alice Hobbs belonging to this couple. I will agree to the merge if you can assure me that this merge will not contaminate the tree I help manage.

Hi pms and Australia Project members, the proposed merge of this profile with Heslin-83 is default approved. The profile will need to be merged into either LNAB Heslin or LNAB Eslin. Once it is decided which LNAB is preferred, then future duplicates of Bridget would be best to be merged into that LNAB (see https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:Correcting_a_Last_Name_at_Birth for more information about LNABs). Please could anyone who would like to have input into this decision respond on this profile. If I don't hear, I'll merge this profile into the LNAB Heslin, as that will entail the minimum additional changes of LNAB. Thanks, Gillian, co-Leader, Australia Project

Hi pms, I've now project protected this profile. I'm sending you a trusted list request to add me to this profile, as I would like to add the Australia Project account. Thanks so much. Gillian, co-Leader, Australia Project.

Hi Pms, I notice that the LNAB for this profile has been amended. I'm providing links to some information about Last Name at Birth and will project protect this profile to ensure that no other changes are made until the merge with Heslin-83 is completed. If you have any other information regarding the preferred LNAB for Bridget Eslin / Heslin, it would be great if you could add it to research notes on this profile. See Help Name Fields - LNAB and Help: Name Fields - Capitalization for more information.

Heslin-83 and Eslin-1 appear to represent the same person because: Same husband, same approx birth and death details. Suggest merging into LNAB Eslin, as all the other merges have been into that LNAB. Thanks for reviewing.
posted on Eslin-1 (merged) by Gillian Thomas
Eslin-1 and Heslin-83 are not ready to be merged because: They are clearly intended to be the same person, and the details are all very similar, with only a dispute over first name. Many of their children have identical details, although it should be noted that there are different children on the two trees.

They really should be merged if agreement can be found.

Heslin-83 and Eslin-1 appear to represent the same person because: Same death details, same spouse details, birth details very close.

Bridget Eslin/Heslin is my 3 x great grandmother and I have no record of her having Emma as her second name. Her trial in Dublin and also all documents here in Australia do not mention Emma. The children of Robert Hobbs & Bridget Eslin/Heslin were Robert Hobbs (married Sarah Wright), Mary Hobbs (married John McKenzie), Elizabeth Hobbs (married William Turner), Harriet Hobbs (married John Rose), Edward Hobbs (never married), Joseph Hobbs (my 2 x great grandfather married Elizabeth Douglass), Catherine Hobbs (married William Jones), John Hobbs (never married) and Sarah Hobbs (married Solomon Myers however lived with James Smallwood for life). There was no Maryann, James Herbert, John Alfred, Thomas or Alice.
Heslin-83 and Eslin-1 do not represent the same person because: My reason for not agreeing with the merge is the reference that Bridget preferred to use Emma as her christian name. In my years of research I have never found a document to support this. Bridget Eslin/Heslin who arrived per Sugarcane in 1793 and married Robert Hobbs per Active was never recorded as Emma.

Heslin-83 and Eslin-1 appear to represent the same person because: Heslin-83, a newly created profile, is the same person as Eslin-1 - worth the trusted folk take care of a merge on this one.

Eslin-1 and Heslin-1 appear to represent the same person because: Same birth date, husband and children. Obviously surname is different (Eslin-1) lists a number of variations of surname.
