Descendant of William Pendleton Herndon and Sarah Lucy Poe.

Benjamin was born in 1845 to Benjamin Joseph Herndon Jr and Tinsley Allen. He had at least 8 siblings: George W, Mary Frances, Elizabeth, Elisha Franklin, Hanson, Margaret Floyd, Julia, and John.
