Biography

Germain Henry was born about 1686 in Acadia. He was the son of Robert Henry and Marie-Madeleine Godin. The family was living at Les Mines in 1693, when he was named as "Jacques", age 7, on the Acadian census.[1][2] He may have moved with his family to Cobeguit by 1714, and then to Ile Royale by 1717, where they are found on various Acadian censuses.[3]

He married about 1720 to Cécile Deveau, daughter of Michel Deveau and Marie-Madeleine Martin.[4]

Their children were:

  1. Alexis Henry (about 1721–about 1758) b. Cobeguit
  2. Marie Henry (about 1723–1807) b. Cobeguit
  3. Jean Baptiste Henry (1727–1759) b. Acadie
  4. Marguerite Henry (about 1729–after 1793) b. Cobeguit
  5. Pierre Henry (1732–after 1785) b. Beaubassin
  6. Marie Josephe Henry (1734– ) b. Acadie
  7. Rosalie Henry (about 1738–1759) b. Acadie
  8. Joseph Henry (1740–1758) b. Beaubassin
  9. Marie Magdeleine Henry (1743– ) b. Beaubassin
  10. Amand Henry (1745– ) b. Acadie

Germain was listed in the 1752 La Roque census at Port La Joye with his wife Cécile, their 6 children, and an orphan Jean Caissie. The family owned livestock but no land.[5]

During the French and Indian War, the siege of the Louisbourg Fortress in 1758 resulted in the British expelling the Acadians from Ile Saint-Jean and Ile Royale. As French subjects they were deported to France aboard the Duc Guillaume.[6]

Germain and his son Joseph died in 1758 at sea, during the deportation crossing to France.[7] His wife survived the crossing, but died the following year at St-Servan.[8]

Henry dit Robert-1 and Henry-4465 appear to represent the same person because: same birth, same parents. Jacques, the 7 year old son of Robert Henry found in the 1693 census at Les Mines, was actually his son Germain. Henry_dit_Robert-1 should be merged into Henry-4465 because Henry is the correct LNAB. (See White's DGFA p. 841.)
Henry-8634 and Henry-4465 appear to represent the same person because: same name, same birth, same parents.
