Two women went to court in 1912, both describing themselves as his widow, and claiming the $1,000,000 estate of Col. William Sutherland, an American mining man, who died last April in England. The claimants are Agnes Pearman Sutherland, of Tacoma, and Mrs. W. J. Sutherland, of San Francisco. The former is the woman named in Sutherland's will as his 'beloved wife," but Mrs. W. J. Sutherland entered suit to enforce her claim to the estate, alleging she was married to Sutherland in Boston in 1874, and was never divorced. Sutherland bequeathed his entire estate to Agnes Pearman Sutherland.[5]
There is a marriage record for 15 Aug 1874 between William J Sutherland and Mary Y Henry in Boston.[6] This person was born in North Carolina, not Canada.
