Biography

Basil was born on 7 August 1774 in St. Mary’s, Maryland to Basil Hayden and Henrietta (Cole) Hayden.[1]

In 1785, Basil, Jr., accompanied his family as his father, Basil, led 25 Catholic families from Maryland to settle in Pottinger’s Creek, Kentucky. More information can be found here.

Moved from the Pottinger's Creek area and settled on the Rolling Fork prior to 1800 and created the first mill on the Rolling Fork.

Basil Hayden married Mary Rapier on 9 July 1795 in Washington, Kentucky.[2][3]

During the first years of their marriage, they lived in the original Rapier house and Basil purchased 25 acres of land from Richard James Rapier. In 1800 they moved on the Basil Hayden Sr. plantation near Holy Cross Church, The deed for the sale of their first piece of property is recorded in Nelson County (Deed 5:535-536) 1/23/1800

In 1804 The will of Basil Hayden Sr is proven in which he bequeathed to son Basil two slaves [4]

  • Sarah ---" I give unto my son Basil Hayden the Negroes he now has in his possession, namely, Sarah and Luke, to him and his heirs forever. "
  • Luke

1811 lived by Holy Mary Church in Calvary, Ky on the banks of the Rolling Fork and Caney Creek.

1824 purchased the Z. Forrest plantation next to his own property which contained 144 1/4 acres (Washington Co., KY Deed 1:381)

1830 sold a lot in the town of Lebanon which contained a house, stable, and meat house to James J. McElroy.

1830 tax assessment showed he owned 450 3/4 acres of land, 12 slaves, and 7 horses

Basil died on 20 July 1833 in Kentucky. Cause of death was Cholera.[5][6]

Mary Hayden, the wife, named Lee Hayden as the administrator of the estate of Basil Hayden according to the Washington Co., courthouse records

Marion County became separated from Washington Co in 1834 and the Pottinger's Creek, Holy Cross, and Rolling Fork communities are presently located in Marion County. During the Civil War, the records of Marion County were burned, so there are no records for the settlement for the estate. Most of the property was purchased by Cornelius Raley.
