Biography

Margaret (Hay) Borthwick is a member of Clan Hay.

This birth date is speculative, based upon mother born 1435, parents married 1468 and Margaret married 1491.

Margaret Hay is the daughter of John Hay, 1st Lord Hay of Yester and Elizabeth Cunningham. She married William Borthwick, 4th Lord Borthwick, son of Sir William Borthwick, 3rd Lord Borthwick, in 1491 (see research note).[1][2]

Margaret and William's marriage probably produced the following issue:[1][2]

  • William Borthwick
  • Thomas Borthwick

Research Notes

Note that Burke incorrectly named Margaret as the wife of William Borthwick, 3rd Lord Borthwick, and mother of William, 4th Lord.

While the following children are also attributed to William Borthwick and Margaret in this profile, no credible sources have been located that support these claims:

  • John (Borthwick) Borthwick Fourth Lord Borthwick
  • Katherine Borthwick

It is possible that John and Katherine were the children of William, fifth Lord Borthwick, but further research is needed to make this determination.

Jonette Borthwick Lauder, or Janet, was the daughter of William, fifth Lord Borthwick, son of William and Margaret Hay.[3] She has been detached from this profile and added as a child of William, fifth lord.

As there is no evidence that Catherine Borthwick was the daughter of Margaret Hay and William Borthwick; she has been detached accordingly.[1][2]

No sources have been located that either name Gavin or confirm that he was the son of William, fourth Lord Borthwick, and Margaret Hay. Moreover, he is not named by Balfour Paul as a possible son of William, fifth Lord Borthwick.[3] He has been detached from William and Margaret's profiles.

Hi,

According the info from her Bio she only married William Borthwick (4th), so removed William Borthwick (2nd) as her husband to prevent the families are mixed up perhaps.

Greets,

Bea

Hay-1027 and Hay-945 do not represent the same person because: I do not believe this is the same person. It appears someon is trying to make them appear tge same when they are not. More research needs to be conducted to ensure the other profile is not a separate person and is connected to the wrong family.

Hay-1027 and Hay-945 appear to represent the same person because: Dup Margaret Hay, wife of William Borthwick, I put more details in -945. I think the consensus is she was the spouse of the 4th Lord.

Hay-1021 and Hay-945 appear to represent the same person because: Dup Margaret Hay -1021 had the wrong mother. Premerged.

Hay-2338 and Hay-1027 appear to represent the same person because: I just added 2338. My dates are very rough (based only on dates of birth/death of spouse, children). The Borthwick link in the 15th century is compelling (see references in my profiles)
