Jalacy "Screamin' Jay" Hawkins was an American singer-songwriter, musician, actor. He was known for his powerful, operatic vocal delivery and wildly theatrical performances. His most successful recording was I Put a Spell on You (1956).[1]

Jalacy Hawkins was born in 1929 in Cleveland. The son of an unwed mother (identified as Marie Hawkins in his first marriage certificate), he was a welfare child.[2]

He married Anna Mae Vernon on 21 November 1949 in Cleveland.[3] They remained married until the late 1960s, but Jalacy had left his wife several years earlier and had numerous affairs. He remarried in 1971 in New York to Virginia Sabellona[4] and had three further marriages. He married Cassie Arnell on 24 August 1985 in Clark County, Nevada.[5]

Screamin' Jay Hawkins died in Neuilly-sur-Seine (France) on 12 February 2000.[6][7]

Research notes

His mother was Marie Hawkins, later married to Andrew J. Maddox. She apparently had three other children. Her siblings were Owen Hawkins and Olivia Jones.[8]
