Biography

David Hatch was born in 1725, a son of Nathan Hatch and Mary Weeks. He first married Mercy Tobey (aka Mary) at Falmouth in 1749,[1][2] and the couple had twelve children between 1751 and about 1770; Mercy died shortly thereafter. Following her death, David married Elizabeth Fuller after intentions were published in Falmouth on 12 May 1774.[3] Elizabeth was, at that time, a resident of Falmouth.

David served in the Revolution in 1777-78, and the regiment with which he last served was at Valley Forge until January of the latter year. Following his return from the war, David is reported by the 1925 "Genealogy and History of the Hatch Family", published by a Utah branch, to have died at Mashpee at some time in 1778.

On 20 Aril 1778, David Hatch, Jr, of Falmouth yeoman was granted administration on the estate of David Hatch late of Mashpee, yeoman, deseased.[4]

On 30 Jun 1778, John Tobey of Sandwich, gentleman, was named as guardian to the minor children of David Hatch, late of Mashpee deceased: Seth, Beulah, Mehitable, Mary and David.[5]

On 20 Aril 1778, David Hatch, Jr, of Falmouth yeoman was granted administration on the estate of David Hatch late of Mashpee, yeoman, deseased.[6]

An inventory of the estate of David Hatch of Mashpee, yeoman deceased, was ordered to be taken by by Capt. Samuel Fish, Ebenezer Hatch 3d, and Ezekiel Robinson all of Falmouth on 20 April 1778. The inventory was dated 25 May and presented on 28 May 1778 by David Hatch Jr. It included mainly buildings, cash, farming tools and livestock. It also noted the widows' indoor moveables. Total was £247.[7]

Debts due from the estate were large enough (£145)[8] that real estate was sold to pay them.[9] The widow's allowance and dower, dated 6 June 1778, was £38 for her support to help bring up the children. On 14 January 1779, Elizabeth Hatch, widow, was to recieve her thirds in real estate: the easterly room in the house, and the whole of the corn house, about seven acres of land near the house and Ashumit Pond. [10] David Hatch Jr. delivered his accounting on 11 May 1779.[11]

The "History" lists these offspring of the marriage to Mercy:

i. Keziah 6 , b. 10 Feb., 1751.[12] (Was she the Keziah who m. Thomas Coleman?)
ii. Abel*, b. 29 Mar., 1752.[13]
iii. Emma*, b. 16 Sept., 1753 Falmouth;[14] md. Mr. Gifford of Sidney, Me.
iv. Seth*, b.-. [5]
v. Micah*, b.-.
vi. Paul*, b.-.
vii. Beulah*, b.-.[5]
viii. Mehitable*, b.-. [5]
ix. Mary*, b.-. [5]
x. David*, b. 18 Mar., 1767. [5]
xi. Grace*, b.-; md.
xii. Lydia*, b.-; md. William Case of Sidney, Me.

The "History" also notes that, after David's death, guardianship of five minor children was entrusted to John Tobey; this may well be the brother John of Mercy (Tobey) Hatch, born in 1724 but whose death year is not known; or possibly a nephew or other relative.

Note that one possible candidate as David's second spouse is the Elizabeth Fuller born in 1715 at Middleborough, although she was somewhat older: geographically, Middleborough is within a reasonable distance (some 20 miles) of David's native Falmouth/Sandwich/Mashpee area, and this Elizabeth has no other certain marriage record; a marriage of a nearly 50-year-old widower to a nearly 60-year-old wife is conceivable. [An Elizabeth Fuller was, however, married to a John Eaton at Middleborough in 1729 "after Lawfull publication & consent of parents", and it is possible that a 14-year-old bride might have been thus endorsed, but seems questionable; see Massachusetts: Vital Records, 1621-1850 (Online Database: AmericanAncestors.org, New England Historic Genealogical Society, 2001-2016), https://www.americanancestors.org/DB190/i/48349/47/1414826759 (subscription required).] Another, younger possibility might be an Elizabeth born at Barnstable in 1743; see "Massachusetts Births and Christenings, 1639-1915," database, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FZDB-W77 : 10 February 2018), Elizabeth Fuller, 21 Jan 1743; citing Barnstable, Barnstable, Massachusetts. An obvious alternative is that Elizabeth Fuller was a widow, but she is not shown as such -- as would be conventional -- in the 1774 marriage record.

Research notes

The David Hatch Jr. who administered the estate cannot be his son, as the son was still a minor at his father's death.

The m. of this David to Mercy/Mary Tobey is sourced in the Hatch genealogy pub. by the Hatch family, Salt Lake City, in 1925; see https://archive.org/details/genealogyhistory01unse/page/n179 . Includes family & Rev. War info.

See http://www.susaningraham.net/hatches.html -- makes the case that this David m. Mercy Tobey in 1749. At the moment she is attached to an older fella, David Hatch b. 1705; her age matches much better with Hatch-4002.
