Incorrect child attached to this profile

Previously, Nancy (Hasty) Francisco was attached as a child to this profile. This attachment is in error. Please see the G2G thread here: Nancy (Hasty) Francisco (1803 - 1850) is NOT the daughter of Ben and Mary (Warren) Hasty. Nancy Francisco should not be re-attached to this profile without legitimate sourcing and discussion.

Birth

This profile is part of the Hasty Name Study.

Benjamin was born in Richmond, North Carolina about 1769 to parents Benjamin Hasty and Elizabeth Warren. Authors and researchers Warren H. Hasty and Gordon Banks have concluded that Benjamin's descent follows:[1]

Benjamin II, b. abt. 1769 was the son of:
Benjamin Sr., born about 1725, d. 1795,[2][3][4] the son of:
James Hasty, b. Antrim, Ireland[2]

Marriage

Benjamin was married to Mary Warren. While no record has been found for their marriage, research suggests that they were married in North Carolina about 1798.[5] The oldest known child Mary (likely a twin to Nancy) was most likely born in 1803, a time that fits well with the estimated marriage date. Mary's parents are not yet known but the Hasty and Warren families bought and sold from each other in Iredell County, North Carolina from 1803 to 1809. Researcher Marie Dean Speakman believes that Mary is from these North Carolina Warren families.[6]

Children

Benjamin and Mary had at least ten children:

i. Mary (Hasty) Arnold (possible Martha Mary or "Marth"), b. abt 1803 in North Carolina, m. abt. 1824 to William Arnold in Franklin, TN, d. abt. 1880 in Howard, Arkansas.[5] Mary's married name Arnold is listed in the Benjamin's probate documents; she is listed as "daughter Mary Arnold of Wayne County, Tennessee."[7] Mary and her sister Nancy are believed to be twins.[8] (Note: many online trees list Mary as Martha or Marth, possibly she was Mary Martha, used Martha while her mother Mary was alive, and Marth was a nickname).
ii. Nancy (Hasty) Carter, b. 1803 in North Carolina, m. 4 Oct. 1821 to George Washington Carter in Franklin, TN,[9][10] d. 8 Oct 1850 in Wayne County, TN.[5] Nancy's married name Carter is listed in the estate (probate) documents filed in 1842 after Benjamin's death; she is listed as "Nancy Carter of Franklin County, Tennessee."[7] Nancy is believed to be the twin of Mary.[8]
iii. Benjamin Hasty, b. abt. 1804 in North Carolina, m. to (Unknown) abt. 1824, d. before 1842 in Bibb, Alabama.[5] Benjamin is listed in Benjamin's probate documents as deceased in Alabama leaving behind 4 children under the age of 21.[7]
iv. John James Hasty, b. 1808 in North Carolina, m. 1827 to Margaret Cook in Franklin, TN, d. 1882 in Dallas, Arkansas.[5] In Benjamin's probate documents, John is listed as living in Clark County, Arkansas.[7]
v. William Martin Hasty, b. 1811 in Franklin, TN, m. 1833 to Lovina Foster Wittenburg in Taladega, Alabama, m. 2nd, 13 Sep 1864 to Minnie Gore in Williamson, TX, d. 1898 in Williamson, TX.[5] William was listed in Benjamin's probate documents, living in Alabama.[7]
vi. James (or Jamal) Hasty, b. 1812 in Franklin, TN.[5] James was listed in Benjamin's probate documents as living in Alabama.[7]
vii. Robert Hasty, b. 1815 in Franklin, TN, m. abt. 1835 to Susannah (Unk) in Franklin, TN, d. aft. 1850.[5] Robert was listed in Benjamin's probate documents as living in Franklin County, Tennessee.[7]
viii. Sarah (Hasty) Cobb, b. 1817 in Franklin, TN, m. 10 Feb 1842 in Franklin, TN to James Kenzie Cobb, d. before 1900 in Moore, TN (husband James listed as widow on 1900 census)[5][11] Sarah's married name is listed in Benjamin's probate documents as "daughter Sarah Cobb of Franklin, TN."[7] (possible twin to Joseph)
ix. Joseph L. Hasty, b. 22 Jan 1817 in Franklin, TN, m. abt. 1834 in TN to Mary Lynn, d. 2 July 1881 in Bedford, TN.[5] Joseph was listed by name in his father's will[11] and also in the probate records.[7] (possible twin to Sarah)
x. Matthew Hasty, b. June 1823, in Franklin, TN, m. 23 Dec 1839 to Charlotte Jones in Fayetteville, Lincoln, TN, d. aft. 1880 in Hill County, TX[5] (Note, some online trees show year of death as 1887)[citation needed]. Matthew is named in Benjamin's probate records.[7]
Note: Many online trees show a child James Hasty, b. 1825, d. 1843. There are no records to support this connection, the trees are unsourced and the record(s) are likely conflated.

Migration to Tennessee

Benjamin Hasty II migrated from North Carolina to Tennessee.
Flag of Tennessee

At some time in the early 19th century, Benjamin and Mary migrated from North Carolina to Tennessee. Their first four children were born in North Carolina, the last born in North Carolina was John James who was born in 1808. Their next child William Martin was born in 1811 in Tennessee. Benjamin and his brother Jourdan conducted several land transactions in Iredell County, North Carolina between 1803 and 1809. It is likely that the family migrated from North Carolina to Tennessee in 1810.

Evidence from the census records

The 1820, 1830, and 1840 census records do not list family members by name; their identities must be extrapolated from the known records. Missing or additional family members can be a result of census taking errors or may suggest children who died young or extended relatives living in the household.

Benjamin, Mary, and family also appear on the 1820 US Federal Census[17] in Franklin, Tennessee. The census reports 13 household members including:

  • 4 boys and 3 girls under the age of 10 (William Martin 9, James 8, Robert 5, Joseph 3, Sarah 3, *2 girls missing*)
  • 2 boys aged between 10 and 15 (Benjamin Jr. 16, and John James 12)
  • one boy and one girl aged between 16 and 25 (the only children in this age group are Mary and Nancy who would be 17 years old at the time of this census; it is likely that the census taker entered a boy and girl but should have entered two girls)
  • and one man and one woman over the age of 45 (this entry is consistent with the presumed dates of birth for Benjamin and Mary who would have been 51 and 45 years old, and would also be consistent with a birth year of 1771 for Mary as suggested in the 1830 census)

The family appears on the 1830 US Federal Census[20] in Franklin, Tennessee. The census reports 9 household members including:

  • 1 boy aged 5 to 9 (Matthew, would be 7 years old)
  • 1 boy and 1 girl 10 to 14 years (Sarah 13, and Joseph 13)
  • two girls 15 to 19 years (*2 girls missing*)
  • two men aged 20 to 29 (the young men still in the home who were not yet married were Robert 15, James 18, & William Martin 19 - it is possible that these young bachelors have moved out to their own homesteads)
  • one woman aged 50 to 59 (this record suggests that Mary's birth date was 1771 rather than 1775)
  • and one man aged 60 to 69 years (this record is consistent with a birth year of 1769 for Benjamin, he would have been 61 years old at the time of this census)

Mary Hasty is listed in the 1840, Franklin County, Tennessee census. Also listed are family members:

  • one woman aged 20 to 29 years (daughter Sarah who would have been 23 years old; she sas married in 1842 and likely still at home; all of Sarah's known siblings were married prior to 1840)
  • one woman aged 50 to 59 years (Mary)
  • one man aged 70 to 79 years (Benjamin)

Conclusions:

  • Mary was most likely born before 1775; she may have been born in 1771 or earlier.
  • There is a possibility that there were two additional daughters, not yet recorded, who were born between 1811 and 1815 who died before Benjamin's will was executed in 1842.

Death and burial

There are several clues that indicate Benjamin's state of health in 1840. When the 1840 US Census was conducted in June, Benjamin's wife Mary was listed as the head of household.[22] This would suggest that Benjamin may have been an invalid. His will was written 8 Jun 1840 and he died two months and a half months later.

Benjamin's will left the home for Mary to use for the rest of her natural life and also left some property for daughter Sarah. The remainder of the property, and later, the homestead, was to be divided between the children evenly. Benjamin appointed as the executors of his estate, his son Joseph, and his son-in-law George Washington Carter, the husband of his daughter Nancy.[11]

Benjamin died on 22 August 1840 in Big Hurricane Creek, Franklin County, Tennessee, and was buried in Hasty Cemetery in Lynchburg, Moore County, Tennessee.[12]

A bill was submitted to the Chauncery Court by the executors on 6 December 1842. The bill included a the will, land settlement records, and a list of the names of all of Benjamin and Mary's children, their county or state of residence at that time, and the daughter's married names:[7]

Mary Arnold of Wayne County, Tennessee
Nancy Carter of Franklin County, Tennessee
The four children of deceased son Benjamin Hasty, now living in Alabama
John James Hasty of Clark County, Arkansas
William Martin Hasty of Talladega, Alabama
James Hasty of Alabama
Robert Hasty of Franklin County, Tennessee
Sarah Cobb of Franklin County, Tennessee
Joseph Hasty of Franklin County, Tennessee
Matthew Hasty of Franklin County, Tennessee

At the time the will was written, only Benjamin's three youngest sons remained at home: Robert 25, Joseph aged 23, and Matthew aged 17. The selection of a son-in-law as his executor seems like a natural choice: at the time of the writing of the will, George, aged 40 years, had married Benjamin's daughter Nancy 19 years earlier and the couple produced 9 of Benjamin's grand-children. Additionally, George and Nancy lived next door to Benjamin and Mary; with nine grandchildren living next door, we it would be reasonable to assume that the families were close and that Benjamin and George were friends.

Benjamin's estate was finally settled on 13 October 1846.[7]

Note: Some online trees show Benjamin as the son of James Martin Hasty, born 1753. James would have to have been married at the age of 14. James Martin as the father of Benjamin II has largely been disproved and ample evidence exists that proves Benjamin Jr. was the son of Benjamin Senior who was the son of James Hasty. James Martin Hasty is likely a cousin or brother of Benjamin Jr.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Benjamin by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Benjamin:

It is irrelevant if the children match or not - if the two profiles represent the same person, they should be merged.

Hasty-525 and Hasty-523 may appear to represent the same person if this other Nancy Hasty was previously married (as quite possible according to several of my DNA sources) or if she had a sister by a similar name. Benjamin Hasty, my 4th Great Grandfather, matches up as well as my 4th Great Grandmother, Mary Warren, and so does Nancy Hasty, my 3rd Great Grandmother, according to reliable DNA comparisons of mutual descendants. I haven't seen any DNA connections as clearly delineated and listed here or elsewhere to this other Nancy Hasty by any others on WikiTree who claim descent (perhaps they should do more research in that area), but, for my part, I have numerous Hasty ancestors that are DNA confirmed.
