Biography

Margaret, daughter of Hugh Hastings and Anne Gascoigne,[2] married John Mallory and was the mother of his daughter, Joan.[3]

She was John's second wife. His first wife, Margaret Thwaites, died about 1501.[4] He married his third wife about November 1515.[5]

Research Notes

Estimated Birth Year: Her husband's profile shows a birth year of about 1475, although text says only that his birth year is unknown. Still, this seems a reasonable date considering what is known of him.[6] Glover lists Katherine and Margaret as twins,[7] and WikiTree had Katherine's birth year as 1478 (based on the birth year on her husband's profile). Born about 1480 works for both of them, considering their children's birth years (c1501 and c1502).

Estimated Marriage Date: The date of her marriage to John Mallory as his second wife, 1502, is a guess based on the profile for Margaret & John's only child (Joan) showing b 1502 and the text in the profile for his 1st wife saying she died in 1501 (their son William was born about 1498).[4] The marriage license for John and his 3rd wife was dated November 1515, so the "after 1513" death that had been in the data field for Margaret Thwaytes (1st wife) was probably intended for his second wife (Margaret Hastings, 2nd wife & mother of Joan, b 1502).[5]

Margaret/Margery: The names Margaret and Margery were interchangeable at the time, with sources using them as such. Considering Hugh provided for a daughter Margaret's marriage in his 1482 will,[2] it is likely that this daughter was the daughter who married John Mallory after that date and that an older daughter, not named in the will, had married John Cresacre before 1482.

The Visitation of Yorkshire by Flower (1563/4) lists both Margaret "wyff to John Grysacre" and Margery "wyff to Sir John Mallory Knight".[8] A footnote in the transcription of Hugh's will published by the Surtees Society calls them both Margaret (married "Sir John Mallory of Studley Royal.... Another daughter, whom Mr. Hunter calls Margaret, was the wife of John Cresacre, esq., of Barnborough").[2]

One source cites the provision Hugh made for Margaret in his 1482 will for the second wife of John Mallory: "Secondly, to Margaret, daughter of Sir Hugh Hastings, of Fenwick, co. York, to whom her father bequeathed, in 1482, 300 marks for her marriage. (Test. Ebor, iii., 274)."[9]

The Mallory pedigree in the 1563/4 Visitation of Yorkshire names John Mallory's second wife Margaret, but shows her as the daughter of Edward Hastings.[10] In the Hastings pedigree, both Margaret and Margery are listed as daughters of Hugh, with Margaret wife of John Grisacre and Margery wife of John Mallory.[8]

WikiData Hint (8 June 2024): Possible Mother on WikiData → Wikidata: Item Q75793827 help.gif. The WikiData entry is for Margery Hastings (died 1514) and shows her as daughter of Hugh and Anne (Gascoigne) Hastings, wife of John Mallory, mother of Joan, citing thepeerage.com and Genealogics.[11] This profile is already attached as daughter of Anne/mother of Joan.

update 13 June - all done

update 2, 6 July - done again (rewrote the profile based on recommended changes by the Magna Carta Project for Hugh and his two daughters named Margaret/Margery)

I intend to "deconflate" this profile by creating a new profile for the Margaret/Margery who married John Cresacre & was the mother of his son Edward, leaving this profile to represent the Margaret with an estimated birth year of 1477 who was named as an unmarried daughter in Hugh's 1482 will and who later married John Mallory & was the mother of his daughter Jane (born c1502).

I think that the woman who married Mallory is not the same woman who married Cresacre. Please see https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Hastings-66#Daughter.28s.3F.29_Margaret_and_Margery
