A History of Monroe County, West Virginia, p. 350-351:

HARVEY Four children of John (Margaret) of Orange settled in the southwest of Monroe about the close of the Revolution. These were Benjamin, (17511826) (Susan Ballard of William)—Nicholas (Sarah )—John (Elizabeth )—Elizabeth (1768-1824) (John Stodghill). A James (MarySnidow) and a Joseph are also spoken of.

C. of Benjamin: William, John, Thomas, Millie (John Mann, 1801), Mollie (James Houchins), Nancy (Adam Mann), Elizabeth (Robert Creed, 1804).

C. of John: Dicea (Bartley Pack, 1811), Elizabeth (Ephraim Broyles, 1805), Nancy (Thomas Paul, 1815), Polly (Edmund Dunn, 1805).

Other very early marriages among the Harveys were these: Elizabeth (Mark P. Duncan, 1803), Jacob (Hannah Swope, 1802), Joshua (Sarah Swope, 1808), Frances (James Swope, 1807), Barbara (Andrew Nickell, 1802).

Nicholas, or according to another account, James, built several log cabins at Red Sulphur Springs and was thus the first person to open the resort to the public. A daughter married William Adair. A grandson of Joseph was governor of Kansas.

Spouse: Mary Margaret Burke Harvey (1729 - 1800)

Research Notes

Many people claim that John Harvey is the son of Thomas Harvey, the son of Deputy Governor of North Carolina Thomas Harvey (1698) and Elizabeth Cole, the daughter of Col. James Cole, of Nancymun in Virginia.

The article "The Harvey Family" in The North Carolina Historical and Genealogical Register, Vol. III, No. 3 (July 1903), pp. 476-480 appears to disprove that claim. Their son who was named John Harvey was born ca. 1726, married Mary Bonner, daughter of Thomas and Abigail Bonner, of Beaufort Co., NC, and died in 1775. He was Speaker of the Assembly and Moderator of the Provincial Congress in New Bern, NC.

Additional evidence that John E. Harvey is not the child of Thomas Harvey is provided by the Dictionary of North Carolina Biography. Their subject, Col. John Harvey was born around 11 December 1724 in Perquimans County, North Carolina. His parents were Thomas Harvey and Elizabeth Cole Harvey. He married Mary Bonner around 1745 and they had ten children. Thomas and Miles both served in the 1776 Assembly. [1]

A reliable source is needed for this John Harvey's military source. The sidebar image and source are for Joseph Harvey and need to be removed. Also, the DAR record shows that they require proof of residence and service.

I am a descendant of John Harvey born 1730 in Orange County Virginia. I noticed a DNA connection between members of this family.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Harvie

And myself and other descendants of John Harvey born 1730 in Orange County. There is always a possibility that that connection is related to some other member. However, I think there's a possibility that these two families are connected. I just wanted to put this out there. I don't have a lot of access to documents in Virginia. However I was hoping to point others in that direction in the hopes that they might be able to find some kind of documentation to either prove or disprove my hypothesis.

Birth information is incorrect.

Orange County was not formed until 1734. St. Thomas’ Parish in Virginia was formed from St. Mark’s Parish in 1740. The new parish encompassed present-day Orange, Greene, and a strip of southern Madison counties.

This says born in 1730 but two sources (Arden Gremmert and Eva Doherty Collection Person ID I24267 and FindAGrave) say 1724. Is there info in here for more than one John Harvey?

According to the Research Notes, and the sources indicated there, John E. Harvey, Sr. is NOT the son of Thomas Harvey and Elizabeth Cole. Therefore, he should be detached from them and his parents marked as Unknown so that people will try to find sources to determine his true parentage.

Help! I'm tangled in a web of Harveys, Ballards & Broyles! I'm descended from all of them.

My 4th great-grandfather was a Joseph Harvey, born 1780 in Orange, VA. He married Lucinda Golden 1810 in Monroe County, VA. Moved to Iowa by 1846. But, who was his father? I haven't found a likely candidate among the children of John Harvey & Mary Margaret Burk, but I'm sure he's connected somehow.

Also, the Elizabeth Harvey who married Ephraim Broyles - is that Harvey-6667?

Is Joseph Harvey (Harvey-7479) who married Lucy Jane Ballard (Ballard-5374) the son of John E. Harvey Sr. (Harvey-1555)?

Who was the father of this John Harvey? I'm pulling my hair out wanting to know. So many people on ancestry immediately put him as Col. Thomas Harvey's son, but there are no supported records.
