First African-American Cosmotology Instructor in the Lansing School District Bessie Lee (Harden) Auls, also known as "Tee" by family and friends, was born July 29, 1920. She was the 2nd of six children of Walter Harden and Luvenia Hunter.

Bessie moved to Lansing, Michigan in the early 1940s. She accepted Christ at a early age, and she continued to server the Lord by joining Friendship Baptist Church, where she was an active member for over 50 years. She served as an usher, Sunday School Teacher, mentor and role model for a multitude of children and adults her entire life. Bessie was the owner of Velvetex Beauty Salon for over 25 years.

In 1969, Bessie received her certification to teach and became the 1st African American cosmetology instructor in the Lansing school district.

In 1974, Bessie received the National Sojourner Truth Meritorious Service Award from the National Association of Negro Business and Professional Women's Club, Inc. She passed away in 2001.

She received the Instructor of Year Award from the Bronner Brothers International Beauty Show Institute.

Bessie Lee died in Lansing, Ingham, Michigan, USA, on September 29, 2001 at the St. Lawrence Hospice House after a lengthy illness, at the age of 81and was buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Lansing, Ingham County, Michigan, United States with a death date of 2001.[1]
