Bessie was born Betsy Elizabeth Hamer in about 1865, in Otago, New Zealand, the 4th of 9 children of Frederick Thomas Beecham Hamer and Helen Dow^{[1][2][3][4][5]}

At 23, in 1887, she was living in Dunedin, Otago, New Zealand,^[6][7]

Also at 23, on the 23rd of August, 1887, she married Adolphus Augustus Edge at Dunedin, Otago, New Zealand.^[8][9]

At 88, on the 20th of August, 1952, she died, her death registered at Gore, Southland, New Zealand,^[10] and was buried in the Waikaka Cemetery, Waikaka, Southland, New Zealand.^[11]
