Biography

Mary (Hall) Nicholson was born in Appalachia, in Pennsylvania.

Mary Ann Hall was born 11 October 1835 in Henry Clay, Fayette County, Pennsylvania, the daughter of John Hall Jr and Nancy Layland.

John and Nancy Layland Hall household consisted of: 2 males under 5, Garrett (2), Henry (1), 1 male 5-9, Samuel (9), 1 male 10-14, Jesse (13), 1 male 30-39, John (32), 1 female under 5, MaryAnn (4), 1 female 5-9, 1 female 20-29, Nancy (32), 1 person employed in Agriculture.[1]

John Hall (44), farmer, and wife, Nancy (42), owned real estate valued at $1500, with 2 horses and 1 cow, in household with their children, Samuel (21), farmer, MaryAnn (14), Garrett (12), Henry (10), Adeline (8), Jackson (6), Sabina (4) and Sarah (1). All in household were born in Pennsylvania.[2]

Mary Ann Hall married David Nichelson in January 1856 in Fayette County, Pennsylvania at her father's house near the Glade School. Their first child, John, was born Christmas Day, 1856.[3]

David Nickelson (24), laborer, and his wife, Mary A (23), spinster, owned personal property valued at $25, in household with their children, John (3) and Sarah C, 10 months old. All in household were born in Pennsylvania.[4]

In 1861, Mary Ann's husband David Nichelson volunteered as a Private in the Civil War, Company K, 85th Regiment, Pennsylvania Infantry, Union Army.[5]

David Nickl (25), domestic servant, and his wife, Maryan (24), owned personal property valued at $100, in household with their children, John (14), Pheba (10) and Isabel (6) and also Dick Nikolas (80). All in household were born in Pennsylvania except Dick, born in Switzerland with foreign born parents.[6]

David Nickleson (45), laborer, and his wife, Mary A (45), in household with their children, Phebe (19), Isabelle (16), and Frank (8). Isabelle and Frank attended school within the census year and Frank was the only one in household able to read or write. All in household were born in Pennsylvania.[7]

David Nickelson (66), invalid, born in 1834, and his wife, Mary (60), born in 1840, married 45 years, in their rented farmhouse, with their granddaughter, Dora Eiford (19), servant, born in 1881. Mary reported she had one child, none living. Dora was able to read and write, David and Mary were unable.


All in household were able to speak English and all were born in Pennsylvania.[8]

David Nicholson (77), performed odd jobs on farm, and his wife, Mary A (74), married 54 years and only marriage for both. Mary reported she had 5 children, 4 living. David and Mary were unable to read or write but both spoke English and both were born in Pennsylvania.[9]

John Nichelson (63), farmer, and his wife, Phebe (59), owned their farm mortgage free, in household with their son, Carl (13), John's mother, Mary (84), widowed, and niece Jearldine (8). Carl and Jearldine attended school within the census year. All in household were able to read, write, and speak English and all were born in Pennsylvania.[10]

Mary Ann Hall Nicholson died 3 February 1922 in Normalville, Fayette County, Pennsylvania of influenza and old age, and was buried at Normalville Cemetery, Normalville, Fayette County, Pennsylvania.[11]

Research Notes

Modern spelling of last name is Nickelson, Nicholson. Members of the family seem to use different spellings.

Mary Ann was the 3rd of nine children (she was actually the 5th of 12 children, 2 dying in infancy)

1900 census shows Mary had 1 child, not living. 1910 census shows 5 children, 5 living.
