Most family genealogies also accept that his only son, Thomas Prettyman, Esq. who was born in December 1719, was the son of his 2nd wife and that her Christian name was Elizabeth. They then had a 2nd child, a daughter: Elizabeth Prettyman, in 1726. John Prettyman III had 2 daughters ca. 1700-1706 by a 1st wife, about whom we have no information, except that she must have died before 1719. Some say her name was Margaret because one of her daughters, b: ca. 1705, had that first name; her sister, b: ca. 1701, was named Mary Prettyman. [1]
When he made his will in 1745, John Prettyman III named his "dearly beloved wife, Elizabeth" in it. Most genealogies accept that she was his 2nd wife and that they must have married in early 1719 (to have had Thomas in December 1719).
No document has been found that gives Elizabeth Prettyman's last name at birth (maiden name). Two traditions exist:
John III's 2nd wife was Elizabeth HALL, b. about 1696 in Delaware
John III's 2nd wife was Elizabeth BURTON, b: about 1690 in Accomack, Virginia. It's known that Elizabeth Burton died in 1731, so if she was his 2nd wife, John III had to have married a different Elizabeth (with no children), who was his widow in 1745. This may have been "Elizabeth Hall".
John & Elizabeth (Burton or Hall) Prettyman had 2 children:[2]
Thomas Prettyman, b: 6 December 1719 in Sussex Co., Delaware; d 3 Jan 1765 in Sussex Co., Delaware
Elizabeth Prettyman, b: 1726 in Sussex Co., Delaware; m. Thomas Jones
The family lived on John III's plantation in Indian River Hundred on land that was for a long time disputed with Somerset Co., Maryland, but eventually was recognized as belonging to Sussex County, Delaware. He wrote his will, in which he mentions his wife, Elizabeth, on April 21, 1745 and it was proven on May 20, 1745, indicating he died between those two dates. He did not name his daughter Mary in his will but via her children we know who she was. The best-researched family genealogy on this Prettyman family remains that of D. Mitchell Jones. It was taken off-line after his death but remains available via Web Archives.[3]
