Biography

William was a Friend (Quaker)

William was born about 1808[1] in Burlington County, New Jersey. William's FamilySearch profile gives his birth date as January 30th, but no explanation or corroborating source is given. Find a Grave cites the same date for William's birth, but again, no source is given. I have not included the Find a Grave memorial as a source, because there is no photo of a gravesite, no biography, and no sources cited.

William was the son of Jonathan Haines and Mary Haines.[2] His parents were 3rd cousins, once removed. William is descended from the immigrant Richard's sons John and Richard.

In about 1833 (FamilySearch gives the date as 14 November 1833), William married Sarah B Haines. They were 4th cousins, once removed. William and Sarah had four children who were:

  • Mary A (b. 1834), m. Henry Israel Deacon;
  • Abigail E (1837-1881), m. Isaac H Wills;
  • William C (1845-1898), m. Hester Ann Garwood; and
  • Margaret Bisbin (1848-1906).

William was a farmer in Medford Township, Burlington County, New Jersey. He died on 29 January 1882. He is most likely buried at the Medford Friends Meeting Cemetery, also known as the Union Street Friends Cemetery.

1850 - Census, 40 years old, farmer with property valued at $8,000, living in Medford Township, Burlington, New Jersey with wife, Sarah B (36), children, Abigail E (13), William C (5), and Margaret B (1 yr, 11 mo.), and James H Hughes (10) - relationship unexplained, Charles Still (30) - Black Laborer, and Sarah Jane Lake (19) - Mulatto. Note: Since the New Jersey and Pennsylvania Society of Friends banned ownership of slaves in 1776, I take the hopeful view that Charles Still was a paid laborer and that Sarah Jane was either a relation of Charles Still or in some way a friend of the Haines family (the census taker does not indicate her position in the family).
