Biography

Jefferson Hagler, son of Phillip Hagler and Jane Etherton,was born on 11 Feb 1852 in Pomona, Illinois.^[1] He married Sarah Elizabeth (Grammer) Hagler on 05 Apr 1874 in Jackson County, Illinois.^[2] In 1900 and 1910 he lived in Makanda, Illinois.^[3][4] He followed his father’s trade in carpentry, and in his later years he and Sarah owned a house at 717 South Forest Street in Carbondale, Illinois where they rented rooms to students who went to the university. Jefferson was a tall thin person who wore a thick dark mustache. When Gertie Hagler Braswell died in 1913, Jefferson and Sarah took her newborn baby Minnie and raised her for over two years. The story is told that one day when Minnie was getting to be too much for them to handle, they called the Braswell house in Boskydell and asked ff Charlie could come and get her. He rushed to the railroad, jumped on one of the handcars, and pumped his way to Carbondale and brought Minnie home. This happened sometime around 1915 and Sara would have been about sixty years old.

Sarah was quite the artist. She once drew a picture of two chickens that has since been copied many times and passed on to other family members. He died on 09 Oct 1936 in Carbondale, Illinois. He is buried at Oakland Cemetery, Carbondale, Jackson County, Illinois.^[5]

October 10, 1936 JEFFERSON HAGLER DIED LAST NIGHT Jefferson Hagler, retired carpenter, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Robert Blankenship east of this city last night at 8:00 o’clock. His death was due to a complication of diseases. He was in poor health about 14 years but had been bedfast about one week. The son of Mr. and Mrs. Phillip Hagler was born at Pomona, Feb. 11, 1852. His widow was formerly Miss Sarah Grammar. Besides his widow, he leaves four daughters and two sons; namely: Frank and Charlie, of Carbondale; Mrs. S.S. Mashley and Mrs. J.A. Cravill, Carbondale; Mrs. Corine Baskins, of Little Rock, Ark. and Mrs. Robert Blankenship, of Herrin. He also leaves one brother and one sister, Ike Hagler, of Carbondale and Mrs. Houston Minton, of Boskeydell. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 o’clock Sunday afternoon from the Huffman Funeral Home at Carbondale with the Rev. Geo. Hiller officiating and internment will take place at Oakland Cemetery at Carbondale."
